I am surprised i am the first one posting the ratty tshirt approach to sun care...
I find my oldest whtie tshirt with the neck worn like a hat, an old volleyball style visor on top works wonders. Even in a stff breeze the visor protects nose and face. The tshirt protects neck, shoulders and upper back and if you position it you can even protect the sides of your face.
I have tried many hats and actually find this to protect very well and as importantly fnd it cool in the hot climes...
Have to ask my wife to find out if it looks more nerdy than that hat above as we have no miror on board and i have convinced myself i look like Laurence of Arabia...

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?
! vote for the legionaire style with mesh sides ,mine has adjustable elastic so you can snug it down whem wind pipes up, and of course a runnaway strap .Look for a rear flap that tucks up inside so hat looks like a normal baseball cap so as to avoid looking like you just stepped off a camel when you go ashore.

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?
I wear one of these:
Amazon.com: BOONIE HAT--Tan/Khaki: Clothing
Cheap, works, strap keeps it on when it's windy. I've thought about buying a Tilley, but I can't imagine that they are really worth 10 times as much.

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?
So I've been using my Tilley for a few months now and saw this thread surface again. I have to say that I'm pleased with the Tilley. Its been by far the most comfortable hat I've ever owned. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it is correctly sized so that it is held on my head by gravity and not by grabbing my head. The straps work well in wind to keep it on.
As a side note, the Tilley I got was treated with the insect repellent. I was skeptical of its effectiveness but one day we sailed through a cloud of gnats and they swarmed us. My arms, legs, and entire finance were attacked, but I swear, there was a 18" bubble of space around my head they avoided.
I need to get whatever this "insectshield" stuff is and coat other stuff. I wonder why they don't make mesh treated with this stuff to serve as insect screens! Maybe I'll start a company.

+1 on Tilley hat. I'm about to send my 12+ year-old Tilley hat in for a replacement under their warranty.

Here in Texas there is only one appropriate style of manly headware.

Re: What Hat to Wear While Sailing ?
I have a Tilley and have a love/hate relationship. Great hat in general but terrible sailing. Any wind at all the brim either blows up out of the way and I lose the protection or blows down in my face and I'm blind.
And I do mean any wind, like over about 7-8 kts.
Really want a hat with a stiff brim that I can actually wear when the wind blows. I saw the post from bobconnie about the Tommy Bahama hat but wasn't clear to me which hat they were referring to.
By the way, am I the only one that has this problem with Tilley hats or is there some secret I don't know?
And since I'm not from Texas don't think a Stetson will work for me.

A lot of my students wear those OR Sun Runners while in Baja. They're definitely more "cool" than the broad-brimmed hats the faculty wear.

Hats are like moths.... they are here for a short time and gone overboard. Just bring a bunch!

Only straw in summer time. Beaver is totally out of fashion for summer wear.

Yeah.... up here a hat comes in two varieties:
1) it's that thing hanging by the heater trying to dry out.
2) It's that thing in the locker with the green algae on it...
