A whimsical tale. Thirty years ago, reading between the lines remember it cause it is unlikely to happen again.

Re: What got you into sailing

Well, it seems I came to sailing in an altogether different way than the rest of you!

I'm definitely young compared to the rest of you, at 27. I've always had a love for the water, being in it, near it, on it, but I came from a family that didn't have the money for boats or nice lake houses, so it was never something I did a lot. I'm also very much a techie and simulator buff, built my own gaming pc, and have been keeping it updated for years. At around 21 or so, I stumbled on the virtual world of "Second Life." At the time, it was the only real game you could hop in vehicles as an avatar, control them, and hop out to explore your destination. This is where I fell in love with sailing.

See, in SL, there is a vibrant and active sailing community. At first I thought it would be tedious and hard, compared to one of the many motor boats out there. Then I actually tried it and instantly fell in love. The simulations of winds, adjusting sails, the sights and sounds of it all are very realistic. That got me hooked, but I never thought I could take that love and relaxing hobby outside of the virtual world....

Wrong! I just purchased my first boat, a gorgeous 1974 Catalina 27, and I am having a blast with it. I managed to snag her for a song since the PO is leaving the country for a job in a couple months. I guess you could say I found a needle in a haystack. So, yeah, I guess I came to sailing in a roundabout way, but what matters is we're all still out there on the water, living our dreams!

Drewski - What a terrific story. Bravo!

So often I see (younger) people lost inside a video and think "What a time waster" HAH! Fooled me! You've opened my eyes to the fact that whole worlds can be opened up for those of us who didn't grow up with a silver spoon. I only hope that, like you, they can eventually look up and go get that boat, or car, or whatever and do it in life rather than virtually.

I hope you enjoy your Catalina and sail the hell out of her. Keep posting, I'll be following your adventures.

Re: What got you into sailing

I am a hopeless dreamer. I started sailing at the age of 9 as my father had a love of the sea and we owned a sailboat. That was about the same time I really got into reading. We had a full library of sailing adventures that I spent years soaking up. I sailed through high school and into college and met my husband at a regatta in Florida when I was 19. We decided way back then that when we retired we would do some sailing adventures. Now we are trying to line things up.

Re: What got you into sailing

For years my wife would go sailing with a good friend of hers. She'd always try to get me to go with her, but I had no interest in it. Why would I want to poke along on a lake when I'd rather go fast or be fishing? It didn't help that she'd usually go on Fridays and no way I'm taking a day off from work for it.

One day they went sailing on a Saturday and I finally relented and went along. Sometimes you just have to make sacrifices in your marriage, right?

We get out on the lake, point into the wind, hoist the sails, give the boat a turn with the engine then cut it. A moment of silence, the "whoosh" of the filling sails, acceleration as we start to head upwind, and then the heeling.

In those few moments, I was hooked. Before we returned to the slip, I told my wife, "We have GOT to get one of these!".

I then started going with her and her friend sailing as much as I could. Sensing my deep interest in sailing, the owner started letting me help hoist the sails and take over the helm for much of the day.

A few years later he told us he was going to upgrade to a bigger boat and when he finally did last fall, we jumped on the opportunity to buy his old one. We are now the proud owners of a '92 Hunter 33.5. We're limited to sailing inland, but for what we want at the moment, we're completely happy with it.

Re: What got you into sailing

9 months ago My wife and I went to Roatan for our 20th anniversary. Most days we hired water taxies to take us from half moon bay to the popular beach. Each day we passed sailboats at anchor and I got curious about the life style and what it involves. I have been obsessed ever since that week. My wife, son and I just did a trial run in Grenada on a Catamaran for a week to see if we could handle it. ( my back, shoulders - her sea sickness). We ended up finding out that this is the life style for us for at least a few years. Now it all comes down to planning and deciding how to buy the boat. We will be cruising the Carribean in 5 years when Im 51.

'and many of us find it exciting to welcome others to what we are enjoying. For some of us it seems to be a terminal condition!

Yes, indeed a terminal condition in that I will sail, God willing, until the day I die.

For me, sailing connects me to the most important thing things. It grounds me.
