Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

" I am a cruiser and you are not a real one because you have GPS, ais, radar, sat phone, no sextant etc. Blah, blah, blah. And you have more money than me, that you spend freely". BS. Get over it. Someone out there will always have more than you, and it makes them no more or less valid of a "cruiser" than you.

And I love being preached to by the guys that haven't left the marina in over a year, whose hulls could be certified as floating reefs. Get a life.

... And roller furling! You aren't a real cruiser unless you have hank-on sails!
(That should stir up some trouble!)

Damn. I started cruising, thirty years ago, because I longed to be self-sufficient.

What happened?

I'll tell you: GPS!

Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

Kinda like real men need a deep pit in their outhouse.

Very few people change their own oil in their cars anymore or have any idea how an electronic ignition systems functions. I don't lament the loss of the distributor and am a big fan of the serpentine belt.

Drivers, commuters, cruisers...all going somewhere.

Then I'm sorry...that's the way I took it.

Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

I think Hudson Force has the right idea:
I'll start a list for the qualities of a "real cruiser" with these two:

1. Real cruisers seek knowledge to safely pilot & navigate.
2. Real cruisers seek to understand the nature of weather and the sea.

I'm starting my own list and a new thread. You'll all be thrilled!

Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

I think there is too much focus on what is a Real Cruiser™ is. Credit card sailors, check book sailors, Rich sailors, poor sailors, drunk sailors, etc, are all cruisers when they travel to other places. It really does not matter how or why or even for how long, but only that they do.

Really a Real Cruiser™, is someone, really anyone who has a boat or wants a boat, to travel. Even if that travel is just on a lake, river, down the ICW or RTW. There is no wrong way to do it.

Lord knows we all had to start somewhere. We really don't need exclusive descriptions that limits someones, anyone's dreams, big or small. If you want exclusivity, join a yacht club or better yet a country club.

Real cruisers are more often than not "self-proclaimed".

...a guy here is complaining because he can't find someone to change his engine oil...

Nothing wrong with that, if he can afford it. It'd be nice to sometimes sit in the shade drinking cold beer whilst some other poor bugger crawled around in the depths of the engine bay; provided of course that he can do it himself if needs be: I replaced a chaps engine-cooling impeller in the Canary Islands and since he too was about to cross the Atlantic, I gently and politely expressed some concern at his lack of tools, spare-parts and mechanical-knowledge. He assured me that this was OK as he everywhere found "someone who was willing and able to do it" for him and that he'd a "gold-plated credit rating" to pay for it; I shook my head and mentioned that I doubted that he'd find any mechanics in mid-Atlantic who'd accept credit cards. Fair do's though, he made it across.
