What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

I'm sitting here in Wendy's Bar in Luperon and a guy here is complaining because he can't find someone to change his engine oil!

Damn. I started cruising, thirty years ago, because I longed to be self-sufficient.

What happened?

I'll tell you: GPS!

Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

Me thinks this is one data point along a bell curve...

However, it's not just new technology*. It's also standard when you're old (ergo, very wise and experienced) to complain about the young, the inexperienced and the foolhardy

*If you want to count something that is going on 20 years old.

I'm having these thoughts a lot lately, and I'm worried. About myself.

Paul,
You're not alone.

AUTHOR:Socrates (469–399 B.C.) QUOTATION:The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. ATTRIBUTION:Attributed to SOCRATES by Plato, according to William L. Patty and Louise S. Johnson, Personality and Adjustment, p. 277 (1953).

Re: What ever happen to the REAL cruisers?

I'm not so sure it's all about younger people, hell most of them can't afford to go cruising. There are lots of check book sailors out there these days, lots of money but less on the skill side. It's fine with me, don't really care, these folks are just doing what they like. They seldom anchor, get into a marina ASAP and find the best bars and restaurants in town. They have come to expect to this and see lowly jobs like changing oil as below them. We are fine financially and yup we do most of the work, repairs etc. but it might be quite nice to sit back with clean finger nails and let everyone else do the work, might look into that!

I'm reading a book on coastal navigation from US Sailing as I read this, and I had to take a break from the chapter on LORAN and say thank you for the chuckle. I'm a young buck, barely 100 hours at the helm of a cruiser, and I can tell you that I'm taking the old-school charting methods to heart.

I'm an engineer in IT, but I distrust technology in general. One EMP, and we're all navigating by chart. I hope that most CFers have at least a basic understanding of handling their vessel without power.

You might just as well skip the chapter on LORAN unless you're a history buff. It is long gone.

That makes me a sad panda. Seems like a good idea. I get that GPS is de facto almost anywhere, but God forbid the sun goes X-class on us, we need something. Radio is solid-state.

It's not gone at all. The US shut down their system but several other countries still operate Loran. Russia has their version too.

The US is debating whether to bring back a new version called eLoran. It has digital correction for improved accuracy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The younger of us are not lazy and stupid! I'm not sure why we like to blame the young for our troubles when all throughout history there is solid evidence of our offspring being inventive, creative, and carrying us forward. In spite of us! You should be more fearful of crotchety old people that are afraid of change.

Oh, this is an easy question. Of course we blame the young ones for being lazy and not knowing anything because it is much easier than do that than admit we might have really screwed things up for the next generation.

And you do have good taste in music, even for a kid. Have you heard Izzy's version of Wonderful World/Over the Rainbow?
