What do you hate about your boat?

We are all quite good and eager to share the good features of our boats, but what about the bad stuff? Is there anything about your boat that really upsets you?

I will start it off. Love our Bristol but it is assembled with slotted screws, thousands of them since the interior is stick-built. Had the idea of phillips screws not emerged in Rhode island by the early 1980s. The slotted screws really make life harder when you need to take something apart.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

For us it's the weird configuration of the vee-berth on our Cape Dory 33, and the fact that it is so high. I pretty much need a stool to get in and out of it. And whoever sleeps to the inside has to climb over the other to get out. Not ideal.

Boat bites are badges of some sort. Not sure if they represent courage or stupidity though.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Oh man- yes slotted screws are frustrating for sure. Our boat, it's a '76 Downeaster 32- well I won't get into the PO's "upgrades". But I will say that for some reason someone along the line changed the configuration so we have a door to the head that separates us from the salon, but the head doesn't have a door beyond that, so there is very little privacy between the V berth (where we sleep) and the head. Just a sliding partition on the V berth.
At least we have a slide out step to get up to our V berth. ☺️Click image for larger version

Hydraulic steering. And I should have gotten the two blade Flex-O-Fold folding props when I had the chance.

Hydraulic steering? Oh yeah!

Zero feedback. The helm tells you nothing so you have to guess.

YES! I hate that IT'S NOT MINE YET!!!

Ps; quality stuff is assembled with allen-head screws. Unlike slotted and phillips, allen-head screws never strip.

Hey Mike, I believe the folding props won't work on your Sunstar, the rudders are to close.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

It's too small when at anchor or in big weather, and it's too big when I'm painting the bottom.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I'm in California working for two more months and it's in New Orleans. Not the boats fault though.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Honestly, I can't think of one thing that I've been disappointed in or become mad at regarding our boat. Sure things break from time to time, but hey.... it's a boat. Nothing's come up that my wife and I couldn't handle ourselves, or sometimes with the help of some our good friends on CF

Our boat found a twin two weeks ago in Sardinia. A fellow named Sully and his family are spending an entire year living aboard their new to them Oyster 53 with their two small children. He's also pleased with his choice, although he's still working our some of the used boat initial bugs. The one on the left originally came from New Zealand and ours from England, who says Oysters just sit at the dock. :-)
