I just de-installed my windlasss so that I could take it into a machine shop so that they could take 2 months softening up the salt water corrosion and remove 4 Allen head machine screws.
Sam, those bolts couldn't be the four that hold the gearbox together on a Maxwell windlass, could they?

I ended up drilling out a couple on mine! Bloody OEMs that can't be bothered to put some anti-seize on the s/s bolts threaded into aluminium castings. Grrr!

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

AiniA, Be sure to make it to Lewisporte on the NE coast on your journey to the Rock next year. Its the largest marina in eastern canada, many boaters winter here and come back because of the vast places to sail and above all, friendly people.

And as for what I dislike about my boat, head location between v-birth and salon like many previous replies. But hey, I feel very fortunate just to own a boat to be able to have that as a complaint!!

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I hate that IP didn't put the mast wiring in a conduit, and the mast is within a foot of where I lay my head to sleep.
I especially hate those Damn port light drains that stick out too far and bite my toes anytime I try to move on deck in a hurry, currently my left little toe is bleeding on my shoe as we speak.
I dislike the helm position that has you bent over, used to hate it, but now I have an autopilot, it's not so bad.
I dislike the level of difficulty in getting the aft mooring lines tied in, too much "stuff" in the way.
I love the engine access, one of the reasons I bought the boat, I can comfortably sit on a cushion and do most anything to the engine.

Stu - I guess that I'm of an older generation because that IS how I've heard them referred to seemingly forever. Come to think of it that's how my wife 17 years younger than me also refers to them - but then she learned most of her sailing terminology from me.

Jim - no. It was the screws that hold the assembly that has the finger that presses the chain into the gypsey on a :ewmar winch. But the problem - no anti-sieze used on SS machine screws into the aluminum casing. Very difficult drilling a SS screw in aluminum w/o doing damage.

"Hate" is an ugly word. If you can use it about your boat, fix it or dump it ! On the other hand, there are some little things that I would like different on my Ericson 34: Shalow anchor locker & shalow draft... I'll fix the first & learn to live with the second. SUndance is out of the water for the hurricane season & I'll take that oportunity to install a manual windlass just aft of the anchor locker & sent the chain down under the foot of the forward berth. I forgot ! The dodger is a bit high to my taste for Bob, the former owner was 6' plus while I'm only 5'7"... but it's down on my things to do list

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I don't hate anything... and love lots.

I wish the nav station / seat was a bit different more comfortable.
I'd like larger tankage and a large fridge
I changed /fixed improved the things which I didn't like or didn't work well enough for me.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

The way I understand it a slotted screw is much preferred as the old paint/varnish/rust/is much easier to clear. Near impossible know a phillips and tougher yet on Allens...

As far as the boat goes been in refit since purchased in Feb. But she is in water and short test sails have been very encouraging. But I am sure something will surface. It is a boat. Still being #2 we knew much more about what to look for..

Ps; quality stuff is assembled with allen-head screws. Unlike slotted and phillips, allen-head screws never strip.
Serioisly. Phillips head screws are a total pain. Lowest torque capacity of any screw head. Except maybe slotted that aren't deep enough.

We use internal wrenching for anything that requires dissassembly. We also use some some 12 point titanium fasteners.
