Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Don't know what the fuss is about hydraulic steering. I love mine. Even when the wheel falls off. My boat is thrilling in her ornery old fashioned way. I do hate the sheet arrangement on my inner stay sail...I have a plan to fix it though. I hate that she's not an Oyster but ce la vie.

What do you hate about your boat?

How about slotted screws made from bronze (or worse brass)? One careless slip, and the slot is gone. Thousands of them on our pre-seventies boat. Best part is every time you are trying to work one out, you are standing on your head, using one hand to prevent some hard bit from breaking a rib, leaving one hand to use the screw driver and not strip the f&$@er. No metric though, other than the newer Yanmar.

Thinking about it, you're probably right. At the time it was a budgetary consideration.
Now I'm looking at perhaps an engine rebuild. Sigh.
Love the boat though, recently got back from 6 months in the Bahamas, and more good times to come.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Engine access ! Almost to be expected in any boat with a 24 foot waterline, but with an IOR pinched stern all is exacerbated, but if my yanny ever dies from neglect I still have a very handy craft that sails like a witch.
Lack of an experienced crew to help fly my super-sized spinnaker.I want to see if this sail will really lift my boat into the air and thus shorten times to my chosen cruising grounds.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Things I hate about my boat. Quite a bit.

1) V-berths are idiotic, uncomfortable, hard to get in and out of, difficult to have sheets for and are a pain in the butt to make tidy. The only merit they have is that they are out of the way and don't need to be re-converted every night and morning. In my last boat – granted I singlehanded – I rebuilt the forward cabin, so I had a full width, comfortable single berth on one side and a proper wardrobe on the other with ample space.

2) This is my third boat with an inboard Diesel, and none of them had a sensible fuel gauge, like the cheapest automobile has. Why do I have to guess and book-keep to estimate how much fuel I have, instead of simply glancing at a gauge? Rocket science?

3) Do all sinks on modest-size boats have to be tucked half under the deck?

4) Why do boat engines have to make such a big deal of starting? In my car Diesel I just have to turn the key for instant response even in mid-Winter.

5) And, of course, there are the apparently inevitable deck leaks.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I hate lots of things about my boat...the dinette arrangement, the poor tabbing at the hull to deck joint, the way the paint keeps getting dinged up(!) the shoddy centerboard winch and pennant, the rot in the coring in various places, all the projects I've started but not yet finished for one reason or another. I can't imagine having a boat that I was completely content with. Then what would I do with my spare time? I like the projects almost as much as the sailing.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I hate the outrageously high slip fee here in socal.

Even in 1980 Catalina was using slotted screws. Hate hate hate hate the damn things. I've likely spent $500 or so on zillions of quick trips to pick up screws because every time I remove a slotted screw I replace it with a phillips. (Would go robertson but they're not stocked at the west marine up the street). I have plenty of scars to show where I was really pushing into the fastener in a futile attempt to keep from buggering it up, only to have the screwdriver slip off and go into a finger or two.

Even the big 1/2" bolts holding the steering pedestal on were slotted. And they were aluminum too - so the slots were merely decorative, not functional. had to cut them off.

Oh, and leaky windows. Hate that. Hate the silicone that the PO thought would seal stuff. Hate silicone in general.

Hated the PO's idea of how to properly wire stuff. Hate the way Catalina just put wires in the deck before glassing it.

Still love the boat tho. Put on about 50 miles just daysailing in the last 2 days.

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

I absolutely LOVE MY BOAT! I love it's lines, comfort, ans sea-kindliness. Oh yeah, this was a "hate" thread.... I hate that my wife does not love Odyssey as much as I do. She (Odyssey) is currently for sale, and I see a trawler in our future .

Cheers, Bill

Re: What do you hate about your boat?

Love our generator but it is really a challenge to get to just to check fluids and inspect it. You have to lift and remove the nav station seat, unscrew and remove the seat base, lift off the heavy fabric shield, take all of the overgrown rubber bands off the fiberglass clamshell and hoist it out. The inside of the boat is then littered with panels and bits. And then the reverse to put it back together. You're looking at a good 30 minutes
