Re: What do sailors do on vacation?

For vacation, well we fly to the USA to visit children, grandkids and buy boat parts before returning to our working life aboard SoulMates our Jeanneau DS 40.

Why would you want to leave the country? British Columbia has some of the nicest cruising waters in the world, and the scenery is spectacular. The ocean is a little chilly, but nearly every island has a beautiful, warm lake that is perfect for swimming and bathing.

Hi,
I'm the Marketing Manager for Sunsail and couldn't help but chime in here. You have been getting some great advice, its so nice to see!

I would definitely recommend moving your trip to October or November if you want to go to the BVI, that is just because of the risk of weather messing up your travel plans. We have flotillas as mentioned in the BVI which would be a great option for you all, you could charter a small mono hull if you would like it to just be the two of your on board and would have access to a lead crew for the duration of the trip, they will help answer any of your questions, you can hire your own skipper for a flotilla as well.

If you are thinking Croatia, which is gorgeous by the way, we have a new product called a Hero Flotilla based there in which you go on Flotilla with a skipper and get your ICC certification while you are sailing for the week. This is incredible because it opens you up to sailing in the Med anytime you want in future years! (This is something I think lots of people on the blog might be excited about as the ICC has long been something which holds people back from getting a chance to sail Med destinations at will.) Here's a link, we just launched it last week: Learn How to Sail Vacationing in Croatia | Sunsail USA

Hope that helps a bit, feel free to email me with any questions, I love to see new people getting on a charter, you will never want to stay in a hotel on vacation again.

Best,
Britt

FWIW, our experience in Croatia was much better... both touring onshore for a week (Dubrovnik and Split), and then bareboating out of Sunsail's Kremik base for a week. We had generally excellent service, and most folks were quite friendly. Maybe we were just lucky, or maybe Croatia has warmed up to tourists more in the last ~decade.

Honestly, we expected that Croatian's might be shall we say "less than hospitable" to a group of English-only speaking Americans. And we were traveling with a large group, some of whom can be a little demanding/needy at times, so we might have even deserved some frowning/scowling service on occasion... but it didn't happen.

Just one data point though, so if you go and people snarl at you, it's not my fault : )

Re: What do sailors do on vacation?

Can't say about BV but have had a bareboat charter in Croatia, having also sailed in Greece and Turkey. I was pleasantly surprised by Croatia, interesting islands and villages. Started in Split which is an interesting town to explore and there is a marina close by. Unfortunately the harbour stinks. Use Split as a starting point but get away. The surrounding islands are clean, quaint harbours and pleasant people. We didn't make it to Dubrovnik but it is well worth a visit.
Will be quitter in September but the water should be warm.
