What do I need?

Hi all (first post!),

I'm really interested in attempting to get a job skippering flotilla sailing holidays but need some advise on what requirements companies usually want. I'm looking at companies such as sunsail, sailingholidays etc.
Would a Day Skipper Qualification be sufficiant?
I was told that's the minimum requirement but I've also seen that a yacht master qualification is needed.

I'm guessing a certain amount of sailing experience would also be needed on top of this?

At the moment, all I have is some dingy sailing & abit of yacht sailing experience.

Thanks

John

Re: What do I need?

Basically what I'm asking is, do you think that a rya day skipper qualification would be enough to work as lead crew skipper for a flotilla sailing holiday setup?
Or would I need something more like yachtmaster or is a qualification irrelivent and it's all down to experience?

In short no.... they usually want a YM ticket for that... but it will get you in on the bottom rung and you can work your way up from there...
Who knows... if your good and they like you they may even sponser your YM ticket... stranger things have happened..
Recommend a quick course in diesels... always need a grease monkey... semi skilled is often enough..

That's something I could deffinately look into, and courses for diesel engines are alot cheaper. Any recommendations on what I would I need for that as minimum then?
Coming in at the bottom and working my way up would suit me

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Re: What do I need?

my experience of this is that you will not usually simply walk into the job as flotilla skipper. Maybe a stint as mechanic or "host" initially. The key is to get into the industry one way or another, once inside then you can aim at these opportunities.
