Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

Seen some well done video blogs and then it turns into an infomercial on "sponsoring" them. From that point I loose interest.

What I find most interesting, is how short they last and next thing they are back on land working.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

1) is No, and that makes the rest N/A. But I'd rather read than watch video in almost every imaginable scenario -- I'm not normal that way.

I've often thought that the key to success is to target your content -- writing, photography, or video -- to dreamers and day-trippers. People out there cruising to exotic destinations need none, they are living the dream and sailing the miles. Of course, that does seem a bit obvious now that I've typed it out...

PS Please bring your seminar to the US Sailboat Show in October. We'd love to attend!

1. Yes, some
2. Usually no
3. Many different kind of honest and personal blogs could be interesting
4. I have no needs for a publishing schedule. I prefer bloggers that follow their own schedule, and publish something when they themselves think they have something to publish.
5. This is actually related to the previous question. I may lose interest if the blogger seems to publish something just to publish something - maybe to maintain a fixed publishing schedule, maybe to satisfy the needs of his financial supporters. As I already said, I prefer personal bloggers that publish something when they have something to say. (For some personal bloggers that could be simply a video of having nothing much to do.)
6. I sometimes pay to help someone implement his dreams. I don't like the (now common) idea of paying to make the blogger publish more similar material.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

1. Yes
2. Yes, Sailing Prism, Sailing Baby Blue, Resolute Sets Sail, Monday Never, La Vegabond, Delos, Drake Paragon and Distant Shores. Although with Distant Shores I typically buy the videos.
3. Sailing content, sailing education, repairs and location.
4. Weekly if the content is good, but cruisers being cruisers they're limitations on their time and download capability.
5. Content. Typically you can tell when someone is just putting out a vdeo for the weekly subscription income.
6. I have made one time payments to some. If they are pumping out 4 years of videos sailing the Bahamas then no. I also hate the phrase "if we have more subscribers we can continue our dream. If not we can no longer film our adventure."

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

Lin-
I don't subscribe to any blogs except those where I know the people who write them. So far, none of my friends whose blogs I do read have included video. I don't send my friends money for their blogs.

I hope your presentation in Port Townsend goes well and the information you've gathered via forums is helpful. Will Beth and Norm be there?

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

Hello Lin,
I've read several blogs but have not subscribed to any. I have bought many books on sailing, several of which are yours & are among my most cherished. I've also subscribed to WoodenBoat since the 80's, for what that's worth, & recently Off Center Harbor which might relate to your seminar.

Oh, almost forgot, I also subscribe to your News Letter which I really enjoy.

No, I do not stream video at all as it's a high bandwidth/cost when at anchor. Basically $10/gig, which does not go that far with videos.

3. How do you choose which you follow
I don't,
4. How often do you want to see a new video
N/A
5. What makes you stop following a video blog
N/A
6. Are you willing to pay to support a video blog
Nope. But then I'm old fashion and don't do those new fangel moving pictures thingys

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

SV Delos and Sailing La Vagabond appear to lead all others. Patreon pays Delos $5500 per video and La Vagabond gets $6500. Both put up a video every other week. Both groups put out great product.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

1. Do you follow any sailing video blogs? Yes
2. Do you subscribe to the video blog? Yes
3. How do you choose which you follow? Depends on the personality of the vloggers, quality of video, type of boat, what/where they're experiencing. Also if I find their experience inspiring or not.
4. How often do you want to see a new video? Every week or two is fine.
5. What makes you stop following a video blog? Not sure.
6. Are you willing to pay to support a video blog? I haven't yet, but have considered it. Most likely to for the vlogs that have fewer subscribers.

Good luck with your presentation Lin.

Re: What are your thoughts on sailing video blogs?

We don't follow or subscribe to video blogs. We do occasionally watch some you tube videos.
What we like is eople making mistakes and learning from those mistakes. But that because we are newbies, so seeing the path made and corrected is enormously helpful.
Honestly, I am personally bored to tears with most videos. Most seem to be a little full of themselves.
The hard stuff and mistakes are edited out. Thats not reality. But, I dont watch any religeously so I may be missing these things.
And we don't subscribe to save for cruising.

As an aside, my boyfriend vetted me by asking me to read "Cost Conscious Cruiser". I was hooked!
5 years later, our boat is waiting for us in Mexico. : )

4. How often do you want to see a new video weekly, forthightly

6. Are you willing to pay to support a video blog

Yes I subscribe. I think if you really "follow" someone, then you are subscribed to their feed, as it's just easier to be updated when new content is available vs checking in all the time. At least that's how the younger generation would view it.

3. Content and quality. I have tired a bit of some vlogs due to the same party they have everyday. I would much rather see substance, like making an impact in the local community/giving back tied in with sailing. I know it's a nomadic lifestyle, but still… I've already been cruising and will go again, so no need to re-live somebody else's good times (BTW, your books were very helpful in my push down to Mexico in my 26 footer)

4. I think a new video every couple of weeks is feasible. BUT, it's a lot of work. I am a professional photographer/videographer, and I can tell you editing and cutting all that footage, for a 15 minute video, is A LOT of work. Then again, if you're making $5k/vid, it's not that bad.

5.Party, party, party, and poorly shot/edited footage, poor sound quality.

6. If someone was doing something that actually benefited the world besides pursuing the endless summer, yes, I'd chip in. I have been mulling a kickstarter for my beekeeping business, but I have a really hard time with it. I kinda feel like it's asking for a handout. But I suppose those armchair sailors out there love it, and they are benefiting from entertainment and adventure… so there goes the can of worms.

Hope this helps.

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Needs to be inspiring, fairly well produced, have to identify with the subjects, or aspire to be them [him, her, whatever]
4. Every couple of weeks seems about right.
5. Stop sailing, get boring, basically repeating the same video over and over again.
6. Yes, I am, I do.
