We've seen good 20 foot waves along the Caribbean coast of Colombia. I agree with others that it is the steepness of waves that is the problem, not the height.

The photo below looks a bit dull until you realize that the metal work on the bottom is our radar arch with solar panels and I took this shot while standing in the cockpit, where the arch is a good yard above my head And these waves were under 10 feet high.
