Fantastic Friday Bulk Rope at West Marine

does anyone know of a place that sells cheaper line then this west marine sale?
otherwise i will be headed there...

this is also a heads up to anyone else.

any reason i should not use this?

Not unless your local chandelier is having a similar fall sale or will meet the price, always worth the ask.

Rigging Only looks like they have similar prices. I got that West Marine email notice, and was checking out the prices on 3/8" Sta-Set. West, and Rigging, each are pricing it at $0.74/ft. I need a spool of it, but can't find the WM full-spool price. Rigging Only is a good outfit, so I would make the decision based on shipping and availability. Of course I only looked at one particular line-type.

i am eyeballing the 1/2" sampson LS for my spin halyard.

I don't know your boat well, but 1/2" Samson LS (medium-stretch poly double-braid) seems a bit light for a spin halyard on a 45-ft boat. I would get some advice from a rigger who is familiar with your boat, or look at the boat specs if you can find them.

i have neither one.
i used a few sites sizing guides, for the size recommended for cruising, not racing.
i also used the math formula for the spin control lines, and came to 3200# in 25 knot conditions. does the halyard experience more load then the control lines? i could do 5/8" for .25 more a foot, or step up to VPC 11MM for even more. i am not experienced in line sizing, and my halyards are all stainless cables now.

Yes, the halyard has way more load than the sheets. Control lines are light on a spinnaker to help keep the shape in light air. The halyard isn't weighing down the sail so don't need to go light. It needs to hold together when things go pear shaped (e.g. knockdown).

You need to consult a rigger I think. Either that or find a rigging supplier that has already sized for your boat.

you may also need to replace your sheeves if you switch to rope.

I don't know. You have 3 choices I can see:

Ask an experienced rigger.

Ask another knowledgeable owner of same boat.

Check with a supplier that has already researched your specific boat. West Marine Rigging may have the answer if you ask them.

New England Rope specs. them out at 3/8 - 7/16 Sta-Set or Sta-Set X if you want to go up one grade.

i talked to west marine, for cruising, they said 1/2" yachtbraid would be fine. thats what i ordered, 100' of 1/2" yachtbraid, $70 lol. cant believe how cheep it was by the foot.

when it comes time to replace ALL the running rigging, i will get a nice spool of something good. this will work for now.
