Re: We Have Touch Down

Here in the USA we call them waterspouts.

And on land the small ones are dust devils. As a kid I use to go out and stand in the middle of them.
That one looks a little big though.

Re: We Have Touch Down

Is there a strategy for avoiding a water spout? I just keep sailing along hoping it does not run over me. I suppose I would let the sheets go if it did?

Re: We Have Touch Down

We get waterspouts several times a year on Lake Michigan. We can spot them a long way off and we have time to plan how to avoid them. Or if we couldn't avoid it completely, I would treat it as other high winds, reef the main deeply and drop the jib.

Re: We Have Touch Down

I saw the same sort of thing in Antigua. It would touch the surface for a while and then raise up away from the water for a while. It only went on for about 10 or 15 minutes , but it was scary. Only saw it once in 8 years, so it is rare._____Grant.

From the mountains off to our right we calculated that it was about 2,000 feet high with the water spout about 100 feet....

Cool picture!

Isn't this simply a tornado over water aka waterspout?
