WARNING - Ao Chalong-Phuket - Moorings debacle

Late last year the Phuket Maritime Authority graciously established some 300 new moorings around the island with some 200 at Ao Chalong, the main port of entry for foreign yachts.

see news report
Phuket NEWS: Phuket Marine Office splashes out B5.8mn on moorings

Unfortunately, the project has gone disasterously wrong. Whoever was in charge of the project was hopelessly incompetent with many of the mooring blocks being laid within the navigation channel and mooring lines attached in such a way that within weeks most had chaffed and broken away.

It was inevitable that eventually a boat would ground on one of the hundreds of now uncharted and unmarked submerged hazards.

Surprisingly, it took until yesterday for the first, a tourist boat unfortunately called the "Booze Boat". Authorities quickly blamed the skipper, despite the fact that the mooring was in the navigation fairway.

see Phuket NEWS: All safe after Phuket tour boat hits mooring, sinks i

Just to prove them wrong another boat the same day grounded on the same mooring block.

If you check out this video it is obvious what they were doing wrong in the laying of the blocks, but it also seems that there was no planning in their placement and they put them anywhere, including in the navigation channel.

Re: WARNING - Ao Chalong-Phuket - Moorings debacle

Gotta love the Thais.

Ao Chalong is memorable for the grossly inflated taxi prices... Trip to the airport $20 but a full day motorbike rent is $6!

The customs/immigration charge extra $100 for weekend entry... But weekends include Friday, Saturday and Sunday.... And every other day if you look stupid.

But I loved getting a local long tail work boat to deliver water in 20 litre drums... That was cool, and cheap, and the money went to the right people... Good hard working Thais.

This mooring debarcle still doesn't rate with the Ao Chalong marina debarcle... They built a marina and a few months later the whole lot blew away leaving only a few stumps.... Maybe the same mob did the moorings?
