wanted: 2-3 days of sailing with skipper
Hi everybody,
I hope I'm on the right forum.
I'm 73 as my wife. Me: good experience with dinghies 50 years ago in France!
She: none.
Me: very fit and agile (5'4" - 125 lbs). She: a non complaining non participating crew.
Goal: chartering a some 30' sloop for 2 or 3 days with a skipper (Chesapeake Bay or RI/Maine coast). We would anchor at night. I would steer and tack under skipper guidance. Skipper would be gallant enough to field newbie questions.
I have never sailed on a keel boat but I know something about it thru my intense readings on this site and my magazines and my visit at boat shows (Newport an Annapolis). I contemplate buying a 30'-35' cruising boat soon... YES (at my age!!).
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have tried googling the myriad charter boat sites and I got lost.
Thanks and great sailing to all.

Certainly, there are many ways to get your sailing gig going. Perhaps try to keep things simple first, you can take a 5-day sailing course with your wife in one of the sailing schools near Annapolis.
https://www.annapolissailing.com/
Maryland School of Sailing; Chesapeake, Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda
After that, you can hang around the sailing clubs regularly. There are always boats that need crews...... LOL

Yeah, I highly recommend you to take the formal sailing course like ASA or US Sailing course. They are very orgainized, structural and complete. Those courses lay a good fundation for you before working with other captian and boat owner.
So take 101, 103 and 104. then evaluation your next step.
Good luck.

You might want to try the ASA live aboard schools.

In RI or MA coast I highly recommend Black Rock Sailing School at Home - Black Rock Sailing School. Private lessons available. I learned to sail with these guys years ago and they are great. Captain Brenton is still at it.

So I would start with something a bit larger than a 30' keel boat. The good think about ASA is that when you take a class through 104, you can be the capt of your own charter boat. Best of luck with whomever you choose.
Cheers,

If my boat, a Nonsuch 30, was in NE I would be glad to take you aboard for a week. I am in Daytona Beach, and not much here but go up and down the ditch(Intercoastal Waterway). Have you tried any of the local Sailing or Yacht Clubs? I am sure that there are some boat owners who want to do what you want to do. Look for a good cook! try this web site: http://www.yachtclub.com/usycs/massyc1.html

Re: wanted: 2-3 days of sailing with skipper
I am in RI. East Greenwich but will be going to Maine in late July in a race from Marblehead to Boothbay where I own a house with a mooring My boat is a j-100 (33’)with a bowsprit. It is one full day to Boothbay and one full day to Marblehead from E. Greenwich and the leg from Marblehead to BB is a race.
Let me know if you are interested.

I had great experience with the Chesapeake Sail Club (chesapeakesailclub.com) where you can get a year's sailing, advice, instruction and comradeship for the price of a weeks take-it-or-leave-it charter. Contact Tom and tell him what you are looking for.
Good Luck

Dear ferrailleur,
Correct me if i'm wrong, but between the lines i am reading that you are looking for a way to convince your girl that sailing is your, and could be her, second love in this live. Or in worst case a hobby you can grow old with.
If that's the case and end of august in the Ionian sea fits you agenda for a day or two, pm me b&b on us.
Why this offer ?
Only the madly in love dare (deserve) to wander.
Awaiting reply,
R

Re: wanted: 2-3 days of sailing with skipper
Problem is finding a boat for less than a week. Best bet would be a crewed yacht willing to take you for a few days. Ever think about the BVI? Wife would probably love that. There are a few small yachts with captain who cooks available.
