Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
Is there any info yet on which was burdened vessel in terms of right of way?

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
Very unfortunate, bad day on the water for everybody...especially the deceased and his family of course.
Strange to hear of all these recent collisions of well prepared and crewed vessels (the recent military collisions and now this). Be interesting to hear the details.

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
A couple of photos showing damage to Vestas 11th Hour Racing......
Very sad time for the fisherman his family and crew mates, and no doubt the crew of Vestas are feeling it to....

Very sad day
You don't see that alot a sailing vessel colliding and injuring other boats crew.
Will Vestas be a cursed name?

Of course both boats are 'burdened' (must take appropriate avoidance action) whenever risk of imminent collision. More important question - who had more speed and maneuverability - a fishing boat or a, well, flyingboat?

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
I can not find any infos on the events other then what as been released yet. We do not know which boat hit which boat. Visibility, avoidances etc.
It is still to early to conclude anything about responsibility.
We do not even know what kind of fishing boat it was. Large or small.
All the VOR boats ar equipped with Digital Video Recorders and have many fixed cameras.
They have what is called a crash botton. This instantly locks in footage recorded by the cameras.
Ironicaly Vestas used that fonction on the last edition of the race when the hit a reef in the Indian Ocean.

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
I understand that the fishing vessel was unlit.

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
That triangular hole punched in the side of Vestas looks like the bow of a boat.
Saddens me when 'our' recreational activities bring harm to people out making a living.

Is a VOR boat a recreational boat or are they out making a living themselves?
If the above comment of unlit vessel is true it sadens me that so called professionals can't abide by simple rules that make them visible.
Of course the argument could also be made the prudent seamanship would dictate slowing down in areas where known hazards exist.
More info and different damage angle here.

The speed was to fast to avoid collision with the lookouts they had.

A safe speed would be the one where they could, with adequate lookouts, avoid collision.

Re: VOR boat in Fatal Collision.
Just spoke to my brother whose daughter was behind Vestas, on MAPFRE. The fleet of fishing vessels, gillnetters, were all poorly lit. Most carried a single kerosine lamp at their mast head. Regarding a safe speed: In a race like the VOR there is only flat out.
Race organization IMHO could have been better had they provided escorts at the finish. Although this collision happened thirty miles from the finish line, that distance represents about an hour’s time.
A somber arrival indeed.
I am not certain if these boats have radar.

The VOR boats are equipped with radar.
Do the fishing boats have a radar reflector or enough of a radar signature to be seen?
