Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

It is a bit NSFW (lots of weapons and some blood) but an interesting look into what kind of arsenal these guys have. Lots of machine guns and grenades, etc..

Good.. I hope it hurts too.

The AK47 the real weopon of mass distruction. Jack Valentine! If we could get them out of north africa the pirate trade would amost dry up. Ok. Almost!

Interesting Insight, thank you. Did they really shoot that pirate in the bum? Looks sore...

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

Looks to me like he'd been shot in the hip or thigh from the front - its gonna leave a mark anyway.

Interesting that those firearms were basically rusty old pieces of rubbish and most of them were without a shoulder stock or had the stock folded away. These were probably not precision pieces of the gunsmiths art capable of stunning accuracy. Don't think I'd like to be on the receiving end still, but they're pretty much in the "smoke and hope" or "spray and pray" category.

It appears to me that much of the pirates trade has remained unchanged since the days of the Spanish Main. Picking on soft targets, surprise and intimidation are probably the main tactics employed now ... as then.

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

I admit to an uncharitable snort as the guy whinged about how they were *just fishermen...* As the pile of guns just got bigger and bigger...

Looked like they burned the boat after, or did I misunderstand?

I guess I hope they took the scum off first...

Anyone know what happened to the pirate crew?

Not as bad as what the pirates did to the American sailors earlier this year.

They started our as "Just Fishermen"...

And end up as "Just Chum"

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

Goodness! Thats some serious firepower!

Any ex-military people notice all the AK47's were folding stocks? No full stocks at all! That was a fit out by an organization. Not just a few weapons lying around Somalia.

It is definitely organized.

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

This link claims that the Russian liberated one of their oil tankers that was captured by this group of pirates. Then they put the pirates back on their pirate ship after searching it and finding more weapons. Then - they exploded the pirate ship - with - the pirates on board.

I'm guessing the smarter pirates think twice before hitting anything with the old hammer and sickle any more.

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

Hmmm, might be worth flying a Russian flag if transiting that area.
There was an earlier report of pirates being set adrift in a small boat with no supplies or means of propulsion.
I don't know how true these stories are but they seem to brighten up quite a few people days.

Re: Video - Russians Capture Somali Pirate Ship

Mark.. theres at least two different types of AK there... possibly three.... Also anyone that has ever fired one of those things without a stock will tell you it is almost impossible to hit anything at any range at all.... and many of them look pretty sketchy... Of course when you have 17 of them randomly shooting at you I imagine it would still be quite exhilarating..... it might be organized but it sure looks like they pieced it together from someones backyard leftovers.... I wouldn't say they were an " elite " group of pirates.

You gotta kinna wonder about the guy that was bleeding as he pleaded his fishing boat excuse...I think he probably must have cut himself or snagged one of the fishing hooks in his hip while he was fishing.... Everyone always thinks the worst.... I mean who would be silly enough to point an antique AK at a Russian warship?

I wish we had someone who read Russian to interpret the postings around that U-tube. The implication was that they blew up the boat, with the pirates on it.

But if they were going to kill the pirates they could have gotten much more mileage out of it. To send a message back to other pirates (or would-be pirates) why not shoot them & then set the autopilot to run the boat into a Somali beach at some pirate stronghold? While this is an interesting video, I doubt many Somalis can watch it, so not much deterrent value...

It's nice to know at least one country is being proactive.

For sure! Apparently the Indians are doing a pretty good job as well, but not much is publicized. Too bad...
