Vendee Globe 2016 - 17
The Vendee Globe will be starting in about 3 weeks. There are some interesting twists this year. One rookie skipper is 65 yrs. old on a brand new, state of the art, boat. Hull is 3 mm thick carbon fiber. I'm sure its thicker in places but 3mm is what he said.
Another is the youngest skipper ever.
Check out their website and please, don't forget to like Initiatives Coeur on their website. Help a child get a new heart.

I believe you are referring to Pieter Heerema that had bought the boat that was originally designed for Andrea Mura and launched in 2015, a boat from the new generation with foils.
Guillaume Verdier –IMOCA / Exit Vento di Sardegna, welcome "No Way Back" et ses foils, le Vendée Globe en point de mire - Guillaume Verdier -
This is a course that has some of the best solo sailors on the world and also a course that attracts some adventurers that normally sail old boats.
Pieter is not a professional solo sailor and belongs to the Adventurer category but contrary to others had the money to bought a competitive sailboat.
We are going to see that having a competitive sailboat it is far from enough to sail fast on this race and we will see him very far from the lead among the other that are only competing for finishing (quite a feat for an amateur) and not among the ones that are racing to win.
A pity, a good boat wasted on an amateur

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - 17
I agree that Pieter Heerema doesn't expect to win. I think he said in a video I watched that he was expecting to be back in about 100 days.
There is also a 63 yr. old, Nandor Fa, racing. He has had Vendee Globe experience in the past. Actually, he raced in the 2nd Vendee Globe. It will be unlikely that he will finish in the top rank but it is good to see them racing, just the same.
Kojiro Shiraishi will be the first Asian to take part in the Vendee Globe.
Does anyone know why Francois Gabart is not racing this time?

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - 17
He decided that in 2013, saying that the future for him where multihulls. That would be alright if he didn't have continued to race on IMOCA (Open 60). He won the last Route du Rhum.
Voile : François Gabart ne défendra pas son titre du Vendée Globe
Armel also races in multihulls and Monohulls and is making the Vendee. He has two top boats (its sponsor has).
In the end I think Gabart is right: It does not make sense to have the same solo skipper for two very expensive top sailboats, a Mono and a Multihull, it just takes away the chances of younger skippers to come forward. There is not enough sponsors for give one top boats to every talented solo skipper, much less two.

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - 17
This year there will be close to 30 boats of all generations. Foilers, pre-foilers, outriggers, you name it.
And the sailors too of all generations. There is going to be a battle there at many levels.
Making it to the start line is a huge success. Making it to the finish line is a statement.
The best boats, the best skippers and the best race. Imho.
Already following the website and sitting on the edge of my seat.

Pieter discussing his boat and his race here:
Tanguy won himself a huge following last time and so this time his fanclub is all behind his race and his very noble project!

The pounding of the southern ocean is certainly taking it's toll. SMA has a split in his keel ram. He is trying to get the keel into a center position so he can lock it and continue the race.

Re: Vendee Globe 2016 - 17
He is about 3 hours out now. Hope to watch him arrive via vendeeglobetv tonight!
Will be 124 days. Less than 100% timewise over the winner. I believe Seb's boat is a 2nd gen one, about 1998 or thereabouts. Still faster than any 2017 cruiser!

Not even any pictures of his finish. I hope someone took him some food. The guy looks starved.

Finish video and interview with Seb here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/VendeeGlobeTV/videos
As well as plenty of other earlier stuff.
If you like Vendee, you may also like this short series:
There are 6 short episodes of the above. Food for sailors' thoughts.
