Used sail boat parts?

Some time in Feb I plan to drive to Florida for a few weeks. I have been looking for used boat part stores or salvage yards on the east cost of Fl. Any ideas, I searched google but dont see a lot of salvage, just consignment and new parts?

Thanks

John

Re: Used sail boat parts ???

You might want to try these guys in Mass, or RI they were in NJ after hurricane Sandy. They had hundreds of sailboats being cut up for parts and great prices I got a pair of Lewmar 40 2 speed selftailing winches for $250 for the pair. customerservice@certifiedsales.com.
Just a thought, because if you pull into a yard in Florida with Pa. plates you get the rich tourist price.

Re: Used sail boat parts ???

Finding stuff in consignment/used boat stores is catch as catch can. Sometimes they have great deals and other times nothing or way over priced. Find the best source is Ebay if you have the patience to wait for a needed part to turn up and/or get lucky in bidding. For my 40+ year old boat, buying new just doesn't make sense if I can find stuff used. Craig's List and Ebay have been the boat's friend.

I have similar experience with Sailorman. In 10 years of stopping by there I have only purchased 1 item - a set of 4 old style sail ties (but they were brand new just in a dusty cellophane wrapper) for $4. Everything else there is way overpriced. Like 30 year old cruising books for $20-$30 or old, 80's and 90s, charts for $10. In same 10 years I probably bought thousands' worth of stuff from my local junk yard or c-list. Each time I visit S-man, usually just before my flight home, I end up just picking up all the free literature they have for the read on the plane. Yet when a friend wanted to clean out his boat after a refit they offered him just $400 for a pickup truck full of stuff. He refused and sold just several items on ebay for $800 each and gave the rest away to neighbors at his anchorage.

Re: Used sail boat parts ???

There's a big one just north of Ft Pierce... on the old highway along the west side of the ICW... cant remember the name....maybe a mile north. I rode there by bike pretty fast.. They even have dodgers, cushions etc that are new. Of course the odds of that stuff fitting is long...
As mentioned above, the odds of actually using something from these places is low... it seems boat stuff is very specific to your boat!
I have bought a lot of like new used charts from those places over the years though...

Re: Used sail boat parts ???

Once I saw windshields advertised there starting $1,100 and up I closed the tab. Our junk yard has those from $50 to few hundreds.

Re: Used sail boat parts ???

I spent 6 months moored in the St.Lucy river, almost the center of Stuart. I garage sailed and hunted parts the whole time and outfitted my complete boat. There's a lot of boat parts in Florida. Mac

Same here. When I lived in Ft Lauderdale 30+ years ago Sailorman was great. You could get really good deals on a warehouse full of used boat gear. The last 2-3 years I dropped in when I was in town and the deals were pretty much gone. Used gear for new prices was the norm and the focus seems to be more on new stuff anyway.
