When I used to ride I used to lane split on occasion. It is legal in California, unlike most all of the other states where it is illegal. There is a huge difference between dangerous lane splitting and relatively safe lane splitting. For one, the greater the difference in speed between you and at he car, the more dangerous. The other factor is overall traffic speed. The faster the traffic, the more dangerous, obviously. I only used to lane split in traffic jams and then my speed difference was only about 5 to 10 miles per hour in order to get through the traffic jam.

Yes, lane splitting is only a little more dangerous than regular defensive riding if done safely. In the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course that I took we discussed safe and unsafe lane splitting.

The kids you see riding with a 25 MPH speed difference in 50 MPH traffic are just asking to become organ donors.

Yeah it's sped up x4 and there was about 35 minutes of footage that got condensed down to 12, which then ends up at 3 with the speed up. It's a fish eye lens as well.

Speed varies; I'd say max top end splitting is 60mph when goosing it to punch through a gap, but the bulk is in the ~40mph range. Freeways here are at 75mph and most folks stay in the 70-80 range when the traffic allows it.

Lane splitting is legal in California, and the largest motorcycle study in the country found that accidents from it are "statistically irrelevant". In short, it looks a lot more dangerous than it is and the evidence backs it up.

That's about where I am. It gets sort of dicey when the 20mph traffic you were in all of a sudden goes to 30mph and now you're splitting doing 40mph. Because of the short follow distances most cars give each other there really isn't a lane to merge to move into and you're better off staying in the split until you find a spot in a lane or the traffic slows back down again.

Been there, done that, 15 years of splitting the lanes on the 91 Corona to LA, both ways, 5 days a week. Never dropped, never hit, 111,000 miles total.
