California's law is that lane splitting is OK if the traffic is moving slowly. Common sense dictates that the motorbike shouldn't go too fast when splitting. Hopefully most riders are complying with these two things and if they are I think car drivers should facilitate by creating a gap.

Splitting is the best place to be you won't get hit from behind. I miss my gsxr 1000 and race bikes sold them when I had kids.

Re: USCG Has 43-Mile Warning Area Around Fukushima

wow, didn't know there were so many sport bike riders here. I have rode for 15 years and just finished 4 years or racing. I sold the race bikes but still love to get out on my fz1.

like all things there are good examples and bad. rebels spliting is pretty normal here. What makes it look bad is the time compression, the fisheye lens, and the fact that most of you had no frame or reference for these things. also, no CHP would even bat an eye seeing rebel do this...

now if he was splitting at 60 when traffic was at 15 (or some over insane speed differencal) , then he would be a squid like all the rest.

I stopped driving 3 years before I got my boat (the time for the disability settlement from my accident took to come through). Last time I drove a car I almost killed myself. Every "near death experience" I have even had involved a car....I find the oceans are a safer place....(the further from the people used to driving cars the better)

The other factor is overall traffic speed. The faster the traffic, the more dangerous, obviously. I only used to lane split in traffic jams and then my speed difference was only about 5 to 10 miles per hour in order to get through the traffic jam.

Yes, lane splitting is only a little more dangerous than regular defensive riding if done safely. In the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course that I took we discussed safe and unsafe lane splitting.

The kids you see riding with a 25 MPH speed difference in 50 MPH traffic are just asking to become organ donors.
According to the Hurt Report, a non-biased report that also said you should have a helmet, it is SAFER to split lanes. If you split past a slower car instead of staying behind it, the next car can't rear end you. I have been rear ended twice because I DIDN'T split lanes. Never had a problem when I did.

Re: USCG Has 43-Mile Warning Area Around Fukushima

heh... looks like fun to me >; -}>

I split lanes also, when conditions warrant it. I am mostly a city street rider and I pass thru to the front all the time, when I can do it easily. Narrow lanes sometimes necessitate a pause.

This clip, especially x4 looks pretty reasonable to me even if not within the letter of the law.

With lane splitting it is a case of permissible because it isn't prohibited, and if you do it in such a way as to catch a chp's eye they can write you up for occupying two lanes.

Any ideas on how I can transport my honda onboard when the time comes?

; -)

See, I got that back on topic!

Re: USCG Has 43-Mile Warning Area Around Fukushima

I wouldn't split lanes like that here in WA, but that's because drivers here are so completely oblivious and incapable it's silly. When I lived in the Eastbay, I did it daily as well. I think people who aren't from Cali have no idea what traffic there looks like and thus no frame of reference. I've lived all over the country, including NY and Boston where traffic is terrible, but Cali is just different. The number of lanes and the average drivers habit of tailgating at 80 on Cali freeways just aren't seen elsewhere. High speed tailgating and lane splitting are risky, but if they didn't happen California traffic would be so bad no one would get anywhere. Ride a mile in his shoes before condemning....
Now I ride a V-Strom 1000. And still do some Hare Scrambles on my KTM.
