would not reccomend taking on pirates unless you can take out the whole vessel.
That is disturbing on so many levels.

"Guns don't kill people, bullets do. Guns just get them moving really fast."

or from Dale on King of the Hill: "Guns don't kill people. The government does."

Have as many postings as poll responses. Lets not debate as I would really like to know and once the word battle starts it pretty much is over.

We follow USN policy, and refuse to comment on whether there are any nuclear weapons onboard. Or any other specific weapons.

In the '60s the CIA issued Cross pens to field agents--as weapons. But unless I'm planning to grab some artifact and kill someone with it, I'll maintain that there are no weapons aboard at all. The difference between the two is strictly a matter of what you're planning to do with it. Agatha Christie's frozen leg of lamb made that clear ages ago.

Voted no, because of the same reasoning. However, by the voting so far, it looks like a neighbor may be well armed. Pirates have a 50/50 shot at getting fired upon. It ain't easy being a pirate these days...

I owned guns for hunting, collecting, and traget practice. Shot a gun for the first time in Cub Scouts. During the fall every boy in high school carried a gun in their car for hunting.
I left them all on the farm when I moved to the bay area in 1969.
When I went cruising it never entered my mind to take a gun becuse I had no plans to ever ned one.

have wondered round many third world ports with nothing more than a pencil or ball point, grasped in my sweaty palm ready to plunge it in to the eye of a would be attacker.
fortunately this never happened,as i was normally befriended by a local who would take me off to see the local night spots, introduce me to strange women of questionable professions, buy me drinks take me back to meet his/her family.
then escort me back back to the yacht club/anchorage warning me about the dangers of walking around in dangerous locals........
was it my paranoia that i carried a leathal weapon?........a pencil or stuff in side my head that said i should be afraid?

Gun threads always end badly. We will shut it down eventually but don't worry there may be a day or two left. Not to worry we have a lot of experience and training with them. No one has ever been shot yet. You might break the record for longest gun thread. Tread careful and the prize could be yours! Once it gets ugly we will put it out of everyone's misery.

All the best and a happy new year! Please don't shoot each other.

FWIW, flare guns only work in the movies. They don't use real flare guns either. No muzzle velocity and too much mass and it's all just flare. They tend to bounce off the target except in the movies when they lift the bad guy off the deck and toss him into the drink as it burns a hole in his chest. A flare is still subject to gravity at least on this planet 32 ft / second / second. A horrible weapon and barely a decent way to call for help.

A vhf has a longer range. The mic on the end of the cord could beat someone to death though a Navy 12 gauge isn't bad as a club. Never shoot a flare inside a cabin. They are for outdoor use exclusively. Using them for other than their expressly stated purpose does void the warranty.

My strategy is not to be the slowest yacht in the convoy , nor the one anywhere near the maniacs with the guns. !! Remember you don't need to run faster then a bear merely faster them the next guy !!
