UFC Mooring Ball FIGHT!!!

One of the sagest bits of advice I give is that sometimes it takes a few tries to get the boat to do what you want. Particularly with docking, anchoring and mooring balls.

So patience, I claim, is a virtue.

Thus, with modesty streaming over the gunwales, I submit to you my latest mooring ball pickup....

Have you got a record of your worst maneuver????

Im intrigued by the variety of directions that you undertook in order to lock on....

I, of course, have never taken more than 15 attempts to lock on.... but the truth is that after the 5th its easier to stop counting.

Mark, you should check You tube in case someone filmed it. Nothing like a couple of thousand armchair experts critiquing you techniques

Re: UFC Mooring Ball FIGHT!!!

Of course single handing and trying to snag a mooring in a strong current with a decent breeze will lead to this sort of choreography. Add in some wakes and no tall buoy to easily grab... it does require skill and luck! I had to make several attempts on multiple occasions. A person at the bow and another at the helm makes this usually a one shot deal usually. If this was in the Hudson by 79th street I can see how it could be difficult single handed.

Re: UFC Mooring Ball FIGHT!!!

If I'm picking up a mooring single handed, esp if a bit rough, I use a line from the bow, then back up to the mooring, on my boat easy to get to the stern from the helm, and can then grab the mooring with a boat hook, and tie on. Once done, let the boat turn by herself, and, if required, use the capstan winch to pull the boat up to the mooring. The advantage is both you can see the mooring all the time, and it's closer to get to than off the bow.
Depending on boat design, this may or may not work for you.....

UFC Mooring Ball FIGHT!!!

Maybe the "magic" of the Hook and Moor will make it easier to pick up a mooring ball.
You can find demo videos on youtube.
I am a satisfied user, just keep the plastic rolling balls clean.
