I asked a Florida broker who was selling a Tartan 37 if he could arrange a compression test as the engine has 3,000 hours. This was his reply. True or false ?

I trying to get a price on a compression test, but as that can be kind of destructive on small diesels, it is rarely done and hard to price.

asking a broker about anything having to do with a boat is sketchy business. find a nicely honest and independent surveyor then ask questions

If I've said this once I've said it a hundred times. Get a survey, you may have no choice, but always along with a surveyor hire an independent Marine electrician, Marine, rigger, and a Marine diesel mechanic and pay them for a few hours of their time. There are a few good surveyors out there, but many are like home inspectors. They have enough knowledge to sound good but are neither trained or licensed in these individual fields. Let the people that really know what they are doing do it.

It's false. But liely hard to price for sure. A diesel compression test often needs a custom fitting to go in the injector hole to test. Many marine mechanics do not have them.
Most people go with "does it leak? Does it start right up? Does it smoke? How much blow by out of the oil filler or crankcase vent?" evaluation

Cost zero. Just a garage guy with gauges and fittings.

Exactly is that....

It is expensive due to the time involved in removing injectors/fuel lines which is more involved than popping out spark plugs. Little sense in going to that trouble without rebuilding the injectors and replacing the fuel lines at the same time .... at 3000 hours it's likely due.

Easier ways to ck out an engine. Btw I own a diesel compression test set.

If the engine has glow plugs you can use them, fairly easy to remove but you need the right adapter for the air hose.
