Hi,

I did a video while I was in the middle of nowhere and has my sail set and always worth your thoughts on what rig/set you would use in the circumstances.

**I can't get the uploaded video to play in the correct size letterbox. Its squished to 4:3 instead of wide screen any ideas?

what a wonderful thing,computers ,video and the internet is.
in the old days we had to hand steer,when not on watch,sit around drink rum and sing sea shanties to entertain ourselves on long passages...........

You were worried about an accidental gybe so I presume you don't have a restrainer? Rigging a way to secure the boom gave me a lot more confidence running wing on wing. I also use it when the winds are light and the sea rough, on a broad reach, just a bit of back tension to keep the boom from banging.

Youtube sucks at widescreen - you have to add the black bars to top and bottom.

Yes, I do have a preventer. 6mm double braid with a 2mm loop at the end that should make a breaking strain of about 400kg.
I like them to be able to break as otherwise the boat is accidently gibed is held down, aback, by the wind. Fine on a fully crewed boat.
Nevertheless I still don't like the thought of an accidental gybe.

Hi Mark... good video mate... spotted the preventer.. do a similar set-up myself and with the permanantly reefed reefed main.
Only thing I might do differently in that situation would be to just run under jib alone...

How nice to let us join you mid Atlantic.
Running with the wind like that does take some concentration with the waves rolling in.
You say your Genoa has UV damage and could rip. Maybe that's the reason you've got the reefed main as well. Running under genoa alone is probably easier, particularly if you're having a kip.
Incidently, where did you anchor at Naples or Salerno?

Great Video although my computer doesn't get the soundtrack (Did I miss much?). As someone who has only done day hopping as a single hander and am about to stretch it a bit further in the future, can you answer me this.....

Your running Wing and Wing downwind while your awake. What about when you put your head down for a kip? Do you stay wing and wing or do you go for a safer option of maybe a bit more headsail and put the main away? Do you set the auto pilot to wind angle or to the preferred course?

Mainly my downwind sailing is jib only... the main is a pain in the ass and the speed difference is not worth the grief for me solo.... as for getting my head down... I go slightly off a dead run so the sail stays filled in the rolls, set the pilot then...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
