Well said. Sorry to paraphrase but rather than copy your whole post I thought I'd just quote your closing line. I think the majority of members would feel the same way and hopefully newer posters like birdy, as well as long time forum members aren't too put off by some of the bickering that occasionally happens online that I doubt would ever happen in face to face conversations. I especially hope that Gil isn't bothered by some of the petty comments. After what he's been/going through, I would hope the forum would be a place he can seek some comfort in an incredibly difficult time. I was sailing today and thinking of Gil and imaging what he must have lost. I don't know, but if my home floated away the irreplaceable personal items would hold far more value than any monetary cost. I'd also like to commend Gil on his honesty and openness to some of the more inflammatory questions and comments.
I'll also ask again for members to refrain from quoting/replying to off topic comments in the hope this thread can continue in the same vein as it began, sailors helping a fellow sailor in a time of need..

It is very possible that he is a teen. Before the Internet became available to the average household, I ran a dial up message and file sharing board. It was a pleasure to moderate until a number of boys became intent on it being a place for downloading pirated software and constant flaming on the message board.

As a couple of the kids were local, I took the time to discuss civil decorum on the site with them and their parents in person. It didn't seem to help.

The sad thing is that sailing could bring a lot more to their lives than this keyboard ninja thing.

Gils solo across the Gulf Stream in a small boat. His time spent sick while anchored in deep water. Watching the sun go down while sailing into an unbroken horizon. The moments of panic when he has to turn around while entering the harbor.

It's nice when things go smooth. The rush that comes when things don't and you have to compensate may not be so nice. The things that don't kill you makes you a better story teller.

Some folks will beard the lion in his den, others will tease him when he is in his cage.

Me? Big cats scare me but I like sailing.

If the boat dragged off a ledge, think there is a chance that it could re-anchor as it drifts into shallow water off a beach on the East Coast. I think he's got a 50/50 chance.

Gils first post indicated about 55 feet of rode. If Dagny does fetch up it will probably be in 10-15 feet at the most .that would be close to shore but perhaps inside a breakline . He will need it to be calm to avoid surf. heres hopeing.
Met a guy in Bequia, he was wandering aboout the world on his bicycle and funding it be selling dvds of his adventure so far . All he had he carried .

If you go back over many posts there are people who have not only followed Gil's blog for a long time but others who have physically met and helped him in many ways with considerable kindness.
Were Gil a dishonest person (and he isnt) he would have been found out by 'those on the ground', virtually from day one.
Seems everyone is confident Dagny's going to hook herself shortly.
Lots of work done already so now hope is our only tool, contributions aside.

We made up a flyer that can be emailed to marinas, boat clubs, etc. If you'd like a copy of which you could forward to whomever you think may help, just pm me with your email address. Or you can cut and paste from this post and the following post( I'll repost pics of boat and drift chart so you don't have to weed through all the past posts to find them)

At 5pm on Wed30, I now estimate Dagny might lie near 30-50N/80-56W, based on drift from wind of 15mi, in direction 010T.
At 5pm on Thu31, I now estimate Dagny might lie near 30-59N/80-50W, based on drift from wind of 10mi, in direction 030T.
I'll reiterate: Of course, all of the above is only an educated guess, and the possible errors compound over time...cheers...Chris.

Ocean Girl, if there's still time to change the flyer, encourage people to give an approximate position, referencing known charted points, capes, wrecks, towns, whatever, and lat/lon approximate, if possible. Reuniting Gil and Dagny may depend on that kind of literalness.
