And as has been stated, they steal power boats, not sailboats. I've not heard of a sailboat being stolen from the Bahamas.

Full disclosure: I have a sum total of a week in the Bahamas. However, I have reported from various places (mostly Asia) as a correspondent for years and feel that I have a pretty good read on a new place. I have had to drop in and make sense in a hurry. At the risk of sounding vain, I think it's always been one of my strongest qualities as a professional journalist.

Your quick to rule out theft with little to no evidence. But as you spent some time with Gill I'll trust that you have concluded that the vessel was not secured enough.

Fisherman would not normally be 'thieves' I'd suggest and behind every community is another community. Thieves are not always, but mostly opportunistic. The fact the coast guard seen it 25 miles away is not evidence it was not stolen. It was purely evidence of where it was at that time.

In addition, a thief once having stolen the boat and realising they can't get the engine going would have been keen to head inshore as soon as possible.

And I've just realised I was three pages behind.

Gil, just don't discount thieves because it's not what you would 'think' someone would do. For 14 years I was a cop and what thieves will steal always surprises me. They often will put little thought into there plans. It's often just opportunistic. And if it was stolen, then as soon as they realise they can't start it, they would be wanting to head inland as soon as possible, a beach, head land, anywhere to get off.

It is pretty easy to rule out theft IMO.

If a crook wanted to take it I imagine they would not bother if they could not crank the motor and would leave the boat making off with his phone and laptop. I enjoy sailing off the hook but I suspect your average boat thief is not that salty.
