I saw a mermaid once.

Did you ever try and juggle three different size rocks? It's very hard.

I think it will rain on Sunday. No, probably Monday next week.

You're thinking about Bimini and the sunken island of Atlantis.

The only strange formations I've seen around Grand Bahama were some of the people inside the casino at Freeport.

Sanibel,
Thanks for the insight . . . I guess you're probably right . . . theft is just not a possibility in the Bahamas. . . and I'm sure you're speaking from personal experience. Good luck and good sailing . . . and, by the way, may I suggest an outstanding book that clearly represents your noble thoughts . . . it is called "Utopia," by Sir Thomas More. Undoubtedly, Grand Bahama is the island in the Atlantic Sir Thomas had hoped to find. Congratulations on a job well done!

Re: Tragedy Strikes.

On Thur the 31st Dangy is estimated to be at 30-59N/80-50W. That's 30NMi east of St Andrew Sound. It crosses the shipping channel of St Simmon Sound. If you haven't noticed it's heading further out to sea.

Impossible? Certain not. Highly improbable? Absolutely.

Again, Occam's Razor is our friend, here. The boat is infinitely more likely to have dragged anchor and drifted away.

O.K,, Neuman,
Let me be certain I get this right. According to your statements: 1.)Thieves are not interested in small boats unless they are dinghys, 2.) Foreigners would not steal a 26' foot boat from the Bahamas based upon a CF discussion, 3.)ergo, Occam's Razor applies. I can assure you, with that logic, you surely would have flunked Herr Professor Schmidt's Philosophy 101. But who am I to judge . . . Good luck and good philosophizing . . . and, by the way, since you are a devotee of philosophy, may I suggest Nietzsche's "Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks"--a primer for syllogistic reasoning. Also, stating that it is not a boat that locals would want negates the probability of theft from a non-Bahamian-- a distinct possibility but how can you be certain that no local would be interested in that boat for many reasons? No one at this point knows what happened to the boat other than that it is missing. My previous remarks were made in light of the possibility that theft could have been an option. A real option based upon the increase in crime and thefts that have recently besieged the Bahamas and the Caribbean as reports on CF and Noonsite have reported. Again, this is a sad and unfortunate occurrence for Gil that might never be positively resolved.

The only stolen boat I remember in the Bahamas was a 50 or 60 foot brand new Beneteau, stolen from the dealer's dock in Charleston, sailed to the Bahamas and dumped in Old Bahama Bay. Have never known for a dink to be stolen, Bahamians don't want our little rubber dinks. They want hard boats with at least 100 hp on them. They love to get them flying on the skeg. Now if you've got a center console with 500 hp on the transom it might get stolen, especially in Abaco.

Re: Tragedy Strikes.

The way a single anecdotal experience has been touted as "proof" around here, I hold no hope constructive dialog. There are a few that see the facts as they are but those that are engrossed in the emotional turmoil of the situation have failed to provide the solution needed to recover Dangy. I would suggest that the thread be deleted before more feelings are hurt. Short of someone stepping up to the plate with a wad of cash for an air search and commercial tow nothing constructive will have been accomplished.

Vasco,
Here's an update for you on the increase of stolen boats in the Northern Bahamas. Perhaps things have changed from the past.

Re: Tragedy Strikes.

I'm late to the party but I have a friend who was sailing from Isla Mujeres to Florida and had a diabetic issue. The Coast Guard responded and took him off his boat. A couple of young Coasties sailed his boat the rest of the way to FL and he collected it later. I don't recall how far from port he was when the problem took place. It may be that the response will be tailored to the issue and crew on the scene. If you are lucky and there happens to be a couple of CG crew members on the responding vessel that are qualified to sail a small boat you may be in luck. What we really need here is for someone to see the boat. Even a large personal vessel is a pretty small target when in the ocean.

An interesting post from a blog from people who live in Georgetown.

All these guys your arguing with have a LOT of experience and time in the Bahamas. Not sure about your time there.

Also, locals don't want our rubber dinghy's, they want the outboards. Half the time the dinghy is found minus the outboard.

And as has been stated, they steal power boats, not sailboats. I've not heard of a sailboat being stolen from the Bahamas.

Re: Tragedy Strikes.

If you read the thread I post, statistically 2.5/10000 sailboats are stolen. On the other hand, almost everyone here who actually sails has probably dragged anchor -- or at least lived in fear they would. In the panoply of possibilities aboard a sailboat, theft of the vessel (as opposed to the dinghy or the chart plotter or a laptop) barely registers. I invite you to generate a poll on this forum and discover the overwhelming number of people who agree with me on this.
