Tow wanted from San Francisco to 37N 137W

Hi everyone,
my name is Alex Bellini. I am an Italian explorer and experienced ocean-rower. On the third week of July, I am planning to row across the great Pacific garbage patch (centered around 34N 140W) to raise awareness on plastic pollution. To do so, I need to get a tow by a sailing boat from San Francisco to somewhere 37N 136W and I was wondering if anybody in this forum knew someone sailing toward Hawaii and willing to help. The distance from S. Francisco is about 600nm. The boat is a 7 mt fiberglass rowing boat, weighing less than 600 kg.

I have some budget for this.
Regards
Alex Bellini

Re: Tow wanted from San Francisco to 37N 137W

g'day Alex,

I imagine that you are a bit disappointed in the lack of responses to your request, and I thought I'd take a shot at explaining this situation.

The route to your destination from SF isn't a common one for sailing vessels heading to the Hawaii group or the South Pacific. It requires sailing nearly close hauled into the prevailing NW winds, and this isn't what most recreational sailors want to do. On top of this you are adding towing what to a cruising yacht is a very large and heavy vessel. The combination of these factors makes it nearly impossible for a typical cruising yacht to make progress towards your destination. A big motor yacht would be better suited to the job, but even such a vessel would be hampered by the tow.

Further, towing any vessel in the open ocean is a risky business for both the towing and the towed craft. Parted towing lines are a real risk and recovering a lost tow at sea is dangerous in many ways and far from a sure thing!

I wish you well in your venture, but suggest that you seek some other means of delivering your boat to your starting point, for the season is fleeting!

Good luck,

Jim
