Top Ten Things to Do While Aground
Well, we're aground. Our sailboat is leaned over 45 degrees or so, and we are sitting here realizing that we have until tomorrow around noon-time to hang out in this carnival fun house ride.
So, here's our top ten list of things to do while aground.
10. Practice your ab crunches while leaning off the salon table into the aisle
9. Practice yoga, especially tree pose
8. Go hard clam digging right off your leeward toerail
7. Brag to everyone about how you wanted to dry her bottom out anyway
6. Do some real analytic thinking about how well your food items are stored. Just open a cabinet and see what flies out.
5. Meditate on the phrase "two anchors are better than one"
4. Find out how comfortable it actually is to sleep on the wall rather than the mattress
3. See how skilled you are at pouring a drink while leaning over 45 degrees
2. Learn new ways to stabilize yourself and try not to slide off the head
1. Wonder why, after all, you didn't buy that catamaran instead!
But, that's our list Let's see what you all think!

Re: Top Ten Things to Do while Aground
I went for clamming and pouring a drink. I feel in these circumstances it is best to act as though you meant to do this, that really this was a recreational grounding and not an accident at all. Enough drinks and you may be able to convince yourself!
I hope you have a quiet night and pleasant morning. Can you make coffee at that angle? If not you should call a mayday!

Re: Top Ten Things to Do while Aground
They do have a pretty clean looking hull though I suppose it's possible they dashed out and cleaned the side we can see so we'd be impressed

Spend the time between tides listening to her tell you how she had insisted you were to close to land...

Re: Top Ten Things to Do while Aground
I would be telling eveyone that it was completley planned, and I just wanted to give the bottom a bit of a clean.
"oh yeah, I do this all the time"
Give anyone passing by a confident "I know what I'm doing wave" and continue looking busy.
I would probably work out how to pour that drink very soon after.

Looks like the perfect opportunity to make that change to a feathering prop you've been putting off til the next haulout.

We cleaned the "mustache" off the bow. One thing we don't do is tell the one responsible for the grounding what an idiot s/he is.

What's embarrassing is going aground in waters you're familar with.

Re: Top Ten Things to Do While Aground
Drop an anchor out as far as you can away from shore. That should help you keeping from being dragged to shore if the winds shove you that way, as well as to help pull your boat away from shore when you refloat.

Well actually, now that you mentioned it, that was the first thing that occurred on my first grounding, then the tide came in and we sailed home. I think she still believes it was deliberate but it wasn't!
I don't believe I was smart enough to think of it then and although I have been grounded a couple of times since then, I am now smart enough to tend to the boat's predicament first (especially the day we came within a cat's whisker of loosing the boat completely).

Re: Top Ten Things to Do While Aground
Damn that was not fun! We could barely get around in the cabin, let alone open the door to the head! 45 degrees is serious!
I love the replies!!!
The tide is up now, and we kedged and sailed and motored ourselves off, even though this is the low high tide of the day.
Still want to hear what other people have to say and vote!
Pictures and video on our blog.
