Top sailing destinations in the world

I have written a list of my top 10 sailing destinations in the world:

Top 10 sailing destinations in the world - Halcyon Yachts

How many of these have you visited so far?

What are your top sailing destinations? Have I missed any gems?

Pete

Re: Top sailing destinations in the world

Been to a half dozen but it really depends on what sort of experience your looking for. Your top 10 are all areas that have decent infrastructure and for many cruisers these days that's what they are looking for and would also be a natural destination for yacht deliveries so I see where you are coming from.
If you are looking for a very unique cruising experience where your visiting areas without freeways and big box stores...a slight exaggeration to make a point...none of these cruising areas would make the list.

Re: Top sailing destinations in the world

It is interesting what different cruisers would consider "Top Ten" sailing destination.

Is it the Most Popular?
The most Marketed?
The best infrastructure?
The Least sailing Challenges ?

If "TOP" means "BEST", none of them would be on my list and I have cruised all of them.

"Best" to me are far more remote and offer:
Deserted Anchorages
Virgin Dive Sites
Non Tourist Culture.
Challenging Destinations
Sense of Adventure

I think the great cultural places especially in Europe are better done shoulder seasons by land, ad I found the high cruising seasons far too crowded.

As a keen diver, remote Atols, the Coral Triangle of PNG, Indonesia, Borneo and Philippines are hard to beat ad are the developing destinations of Mayamar.
Each to their own!

I have worked in Myanmar for one year, go now until itís not too late, also, adding to your point ( good point) the tourist you will find there are very different from tourist in developed countries. Vanuatu is also another good destination.

Re: Top sailing destinations in the world

Yes, as soon as a Destination is discovered, it changes.

I worked closely with Carl Roessler, a great photographer and pioneer of live aboard dive tours.
https://www.amazon.com/Carl-Roessler/e/B001HPSTI2

We explored a lot of Micronessia together in the 80's. Many years later Carl calculated that a Dive Site remained special for only about 5 years, once the tourists arrived....The fish simply went elsewhere!

Cruising for me is all about pioneering new locations, often only accessible during short weather windows, but definitely well off the beaten path

Very true, "Best" is one of my pet peeve words because its essentially meaningless unless clear criteria are provided. Its like the many lists of "Best" places to live or retire...my personal criteria are VERY different than most.

The OPs list has some awesome places, but some of them are cold, and some are very developed/crowded...taking those off my personal list.

For example, The BVI are beautiful, and at the moment less crowded, but would I cruise there when the charter industry is back in full swing...HELL NO!

For us, we really enjoy the San Blas...I almost hate to admit we are now on our 4th season there!

I won't do cold on a sailboat anymore.
Getting old?
Probably.

Re: Top sailing destinations in the world

For fantastic diving/snorkeling and Ďremotenessí, Iíd say the Tuamotus (French Polynesia), Chesterfield Reef (New Caledonia) and Take Bone Rate (Indonesia).

For interesting cultural experiences, Iíd vote for Vanuatu and Bali.

For spectacular scenic vistas, itís a toss up between Patagonia and Alaska.

Easiest place to repair or maintain a boat is the USA.

Fair winds and calm seas.

+1 Pelagic. I won't tell you where my favorite places are, because I don't want them spoiled by hordes of boats.
