and 95% of the time requires little preparation.....or seamanship, let alone any knowledge of rocket science.

But the "Bite you on the bum" 5% is always out there, whether folk think getting bitten on the bum is simply bad luck is up to them.

and simply because the 5% is only 5% - the stories / events are unusual and that's what makes 'em interesting ....viewing quite often wrapped up with the term "learning from others", whereas mostly it's rubber necking a motorway pile up - whilst thinking "what a complete idiot" . But I appreciate YMMV on that one .


FWIW I don't scare easily - but am wary of a lot, afloat and onshore......but I've had me moments!

I suspect when sailors gather they talk about the *adventures* because they are less boring than that perfect sail we all hope to find. What do we say about that one....the sails were drawing nicely, I made a good turn of speed and it was a nice ride! Story over and no opportunity to figure out how to avoid the adventure the next time.

What i fear most is the unknown, i would rather know what might possible happen so that i can plan and possible equip for that eventuality should it arise.


So i read a scary story about a boat sinking 200 miles offshore cause a through hull has failed. Know that i know this can happen i will locate where my through hulls are and have wooden bungs located where i might just possibly need them. Further more instead of saying i will check the through hull (that i have never check since i bought the boat 5 years ago) before going off shore.


So you wife (or husband) tells you that some yacht sank 150 miles offshore cause because through hulls failed you are in the position of saying " i know dear that we the boat is set up this way ... let me show you what we would do".

Lets say **** happens you have a real chance of dealing with it.

Risks, identify and manage. Turn negatives in to positives especialy if you want some one with you.

Its just as I was reading your post I had a mental flash of a guy checking the car before heading to the boat...
Blanket, food, water.... car may break down... its June but there may be a blizzard, GW n all... oh may be in an accident... hang on the ambulance coming for me may have an accident.... defibulator, saline drip, cold box with 2 pints blood, 1st aid kit with morphine...
All there... right... oh.. hang on I need gas... **** there could be a robbery while I'm there... vest/stab jacket, pistol, mace...
