To Scuttle or Not - That Is the Question

In a number of threads in this and other forums, opinions have been raised in relation to abandoned boats at sea where the sailor has been rescued for one reason or another. What is the right thing to do? Do you scuttle the boat or not, the boat may be fine but the sailor sick or injured, the sailor may be fine and the boat is broken but still floating.

The rescue authorities like to scuttle. But I prefer the more entrepenerial ideas of leaving it afloat to be salvaged

I would love to come accross a Oyster 65 where the sea sick crew has been air freighted off.

"Do we salvage the Oyster and leave the Beneteau?"
"Lets check the wine cellar and Humidor first!"

Yea, I used to think that too, but the problem is, especially with a 65 footer and upwards, is that the airlifted crew have invariably left a horrible mess down below... broken dishes everywhere.... its just not worth the bother.
Hang on...... whats that white spot on the horizon!

(at christmas time , a couple of days off the nz coast, a 17m was abandoned and then the owner got it back with the help of the local fisherman. Here's the link)

Which would you rather run into in the middle of the night, a half awash derelict, or -- nothing?

Every picture of a boat abandoned at sea that I have ever seen shows sails torn to shreds and the boat covered in bird s*#$%. Might not be bad if it was close to shore and one could power wash it, but I wouldn't want to cross half an ocean in it. I can just imagine the mold down below...

Scuttle it...

Twice, I've seen first hand experance of this.. The first time, a 38 foot cat brought up the coast for the Boat show in Oakland, and abandon off the coast due to bad weather.. floated up on shore in my friends backyard, on the beach, in Santa Cruz.
Beautiful boat, been to Mexico a couple times in it, Named "Out Of Africa"...
Second boat, a custom Cat built for racing, turned turtle durring the Single Handed Farlons Race a few years ago.. It was being raced Double handed.. both guys got off OK but the boat was left a-drift.... story is it showed up in the fare east, was righted and re-decked and now lives its life as a fishing boat..........
Let-um float and live another life........

Most policies would, but I do know that there are some that specifically do NOT cover abandonment. As always, read your policy.
