The truth is that most of the folks that have wowed me with service were not in "tip" positions. Why is that? Because it is about the person, not the tip. As for marinas, they should pay and manage their people such that tips are improper. I want my employee treating EVERYONE with the same respect.

Tipping has very little to do with the server, and everything to do with character, the service and recognition.

When I was in business, I used to go to dinners with clients just to watch how they treated the waitress and how they tipped.

Here is my tip and for free do not pay gratuities.
To me it says more about an economy that has problems in its actual structure and a strange culture of the country if the person doing a job needs tips to earn the equivalent of a standard wage by getting tips.
Aren't there laws that prohibit these scams by employers.
Yes I am another stingy Aussie but have been fortunate enough to travel to more countries than most but I just do not get it.Yes I understand how it works in the USA but have the workers paid the correct amount and the whole thing would go away .
I think its more like extortion or bribery..ever tried to tip a cop?

We tip $5 for help with a line from staff. If two show up, the first dock hand gets it. Toward the end of the season we may be the only boat coming in that day, I'll go $10. They're good kids. Pump out is always 10 bucks

I was talking about rationalization.

Tipping in Washington is strictly about character.

I've given plenty of tips in England, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Perhaps they're not part of Europe.

Really? Whilst I find Aussies to be polite and friendly in general, I think the service at most Aus Restaurants and other Service locations (Hotel staff etc) to be considerably lacking compared to almost any other area of the world.

I had always chalked this up to the general lack of tipping as an incentive/reward for better service...

Question was about tipping not service quality.Tipping should not and is not related to quality of service but if you think someone has been outstanding and you want to reward them then give em a tip.
Now good service and Australia is not something that should be in the same sentence.I have had service in Aus second to none but I think as a country our hotel ,shop and restaurant service regardless of price can leave a lot to be desired compared to many other countries.

I think that for most of us, tipping is very directly related to quality of service and that's as it should be too. It also depends on other factors, but quality of service is the most important single factor to me.

I don't think anyone feels the concept of tipping is a good one (except for those receiving tips and not reporting them on their taxes) but the reality is, tipping is expected in many situations in many countries and anyone who claims he is not tipping because it's wrong is just using this as an excuse for being cheap. Cheap!
