Well she is now my problem, um errr boat!

Chapa'ai a Bob Perry classic, 1981 Lafitte Cutter, a sloop for now though..

yes she has teak decks, yes there are a few small porthole leaks, yes there is work to be done, but she sails well, the hull itself is solid, the iron genny is only a few years old, and she is purty!

My wife and I are still in the slightly more distant planning phase (5-7 years) but reading your blog gives me hope. As luck would have it, we live in Austin too. We should sync up for a beer sometime and discuss "crazy" dreams.

Well I started looking +2 years ago... I was not ready to buy when I started looking. I had a 5 year plan that I am 1/2 way through. This was a bit on the outside of my buy timeline, but when I saw her pop up on YachtWorld, I had to put my finger on the trigger. She ticked enough of the "required boxes". Plus she was actually in Texas which was worth quite a bit.

I had a spreadsheet that I used to try and compare different boats. I started with a base value between 0 - 100 of how much I liked the boat boat. Then I had a list of equipment (rigging, engine, water tankage, fuel tankage, etc) that I gave a 1-10 score to. I would subtract score for distance or things i felt where negative. Now this was admittedly not really scientific, but since I was the one assigning the #'s they where at least consistent. And it did help with looking with my head too, not just my heart.

Wow. Jumping from 27' to 44'. That skips over about four boats from the way I did things.

The Lafitte 44 is a lovely boat. I remember climbing down the companionway on one, the process involving about a zillion steps on the ladder, and thinking, "This boat needs an escalator."
