Re: The Way to Treat Pirates

Considering all of the laws that prohibit fire arms, the best possible defense against pirates is avoidance, in actuality land based crime is much more likely...and this is also avoidable to a certain degree.

I was never trying to suggest that an armed solution wouldn't be required, just that alone as a "deterrent" it is useless if people are starving. Perhaps the naivety here is some understanding of what people will do in that situation, i can only imagine what 5 days (let alone 5 years) of no food would end up looking like in the US, Somalia with white picket fences?

I do say that the developed / armed world would be guilty of pretty crappy morals if we spend $10 billion on killing them and $10 million on helping them, which is where the balance is atm.

Especially as it was occupied by the British and the Italians just 70 odd years ago there is some argument that their situation has been influenced by external factors.

*sigh* - that and randomly assigning countries and borders is exactly what stuffed most of Africa.

Re: The Way to Treat Pirates

May I suggest some basic reading on the subject for those who think this can be so easily solved. You will note that there is quite a bit of military firepower already being used but with limited results.

I think what he was saying was, what would the entire US look like after 5 days of no food, let alone 5 years?
I think it would probably look much worse than Somalia. No way everyone will quietly starve to death without crime or conflict.

Re: The Way to Treat Pirates

Borders in Africa and the Middle East were never set randomly. Rather cunningly, especially by the british who were experts, borders were set so as to prevent potential enemies and sh*t stirrers from disturbing the "peace" of the empire. What's wrong with applying the laws of the sea, which prescribe hanging by the neck until dead as the punishment. I don't give a damn if they're starving or naked-piracy needs swift response. So sick of the bleeding hearts making excuses for serious, VERY serious criminal behaviour.

You might want to read the entire thread because I think this has already been addresses multiple times.

Cunningly!? Just look what happened when they invented Pakistan! Admittedly, there was no way to end the empire without bloodshed, but they sure did a terrible job in some areas.

Whistle on, mate. I've read the entire thread, and have been since its inception, but it seems that some things can't be repeated often enough.

Good, since you've been keeping up you know why the cowboy/Rambo approach does not work no matter how many time you say it.

58 countries have used capital punishment in the last 10 years, 100+ not.

In international waters is hanging still the punishment for piracy? Or does it depend on who catches them?

Including starting and waging unwinnable wars against militia where 90+% of the casualties will be civilians
