We find it pretty enjoyable, and I don't think we'd be as happy in a marina. Especially after this thread.
The problem in our yacht club was the large contingent of non-boat owners who were firmly convinced that the yacht club would be a better club without the yachts!

Re: The Political World of the Marinas

Well, I just pulled into Baie-Comeau marina (Club nautique de Baie-Comeau) on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Small city on the edge of civilization. My broken French is matched by the member’s and staff’s broken English. Somehow, we manage to communicate and enjoy each other’s company.

People are friendly, helpful and just plain awesome. So too with our last marina stop. There are cliches and in-groups everywhere, it is true. But I find you get back what you put out. Most people are great. They’re just different than you, which is part of the reason for going cruising, is it not?

And then there's the sailing skills. My recent observations in our marina include somebody cutting another boat off by pulling out of the service dock without looking, somebody seriously threatening other boats while docking, somebody ignorant about protocol regarding fishing in the marina, somebody accidentally pumping out contaminated bilge water, ...

Fortunately they're still prepared to put up with me while I learn the ropes ...

Maybe it's that I've never been in a marina long enough this "stuff" since prior to this me longest USA marina stay was 4 days.

And one day Brother, God willing, I will be tied up next to you, and we can have a few beers, and trade war stories!

I look forward to that, first nights beer is on me.
Be sure to bring a coin though, or you will be buying a lot of beer later

I certainly hope to meet all y'all someday. This upcoming adventure sounds exquisitely awesome and awful at the same time, which is right where I want to be.

After all, it can't be worse than Jersey.

Re: The Political World of the Marinas

Maybe you carry that negative perception for a while and then you all prep for a hurricane at that same marina, find everyone working together, checking on each other, checking on each other's boats, genuinely helping each other, and you come away with a whole different perspective of the people around you.

One the other hand, much of my nautical miseducation WAS completed in marinas.

This kind of post makes me all the more happy that I live on "the edge" of civilization.
