Read one of his books. Sounded like a very down to earth philosophy. I liked it a lot. (the Wisdom of Insecurity)

Yes. Like the Ox and the shepherd in Taoism.

Except this sort of Eastern imagery tends to send a Western brain on its usual dualistic tracks.

Most will see it as a catchy and entertaining parallel /parable. Very few will see that rider and the elephant are the same thing. There is no ox, there is no shepherd!

Zeehag, I am surprised you are in a marina. Why not anchor out?

Another interesting video

I liked the toy helicopter, each of them using the same method but thinking they have their own special method

The planet will go on just fine with or without us.

But what is truly interesting is that we -- Homo sapiens -- can see into the future, and we can also care about other species and ecosystems.

I find this fascinating.
For me it was volcano national park in Hawaii. Seeing just the tops of 70 foot trees sticking out of lava flows, the number of lava flows and eruptions, walking out and seeing real time live lava flow and then realizing we could be flowed over any time the planet gets tired of us.

And looking at plate tectonics and the ring of fire? Holy cow!

We are definitely hugely impactful to our environment, we have all but mastered air, water and near space. We are for the most art totally aware of our impact and are doing tons better at keeping the environment healthy but procreation will eventually be our downfall.

In the meantime, I'm going sailing, (interspersed of course with lots of procreation practice)...

Re: The Philosophy behind Sailing Simply and cheaply

I love reading about studies of what makes people happy, and how much it is or is not a function of money or material possessions. Interesting how we often think we just need a little more. But then I always come back to the realization that its ultimately not about knowing and analysis, which the writers and therapist are so good at, but its about doing, about the actual living of it. During an Outward Bound course many years ago I was given this quote at the end and I think it sums the idea up well.

If I Had My Life to Live Over (by Nadine Stair - at age 85)

"If I had my life to live over, I'd dare to make more mistakes next time. I'd relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones. You see, I'm one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I've had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I'd have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day. I've been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot-water bottle, a raincoat, and a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have. If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies."

Happy is serenity. Serenity is constant vigilance. Vigilance is responsibility. Response is compromise. To much compromise is misery I think I saw a flow chart . all the arrows got to missery except there was one that added balanced compromise.
What I found: serene, responsible people who can compromise die. Their chance of dropping out are the same as anxiety ridden rogues that have everything their way.
Some where most of us lose this logic and add values we add quality to the equation. Why?
The only explanation I can find is there is a binding thread. A common

Re: The Philosophy behind Sailing Simply and cheaply

Greetings All,

I have been more than busy in the world of shiny things and technology for a few months and have not been disposed to log on. I was delighted to see this thread and all those who are posting on it.

I suppose that I fall somewhere in between the purists and the poets. I find that material things used for creative purpose are worth the effort. It is also necessary to have relief from materialist society...hence Idora. An old design all wood ketch is an excellent refuge from modernity.

When DOJ mentioned his love of shiny things I could not help but remember the foil insulation he put up in the salon overhead and the tinfoil hat to go with it. Now that is philosophy at it's inscrutable best!

One goat, one boat and one note to spend! Never you mind that you've gone round the bend!

Here's to the boats and the people on 'em.

Once I realized that I could never ‘definitively’ prove my existence, it somehow freed me to follow my heart and private sense of accomplishments without the need for external approval, justification or acceptance.

I do good things to others for purely selfish reason and expect nothing in return.

Never underestimate the ‘importance of being selfish!’

Yea, I always expected it was all about me.

The beautiful irony of this is that “me” is only an assumption.

And you know what they say about ... Ass_u_me -ption?...
