Along the same lines (and in the spirit of simple, if not cheap), does anyone use inflatable fenders? I become increasingly resentful of all the dead space our static funders take up in the sail locker. I've been looking at Easystow or Praktek models. Any experience?
I have seen the Praktek fenders on some of the mega-yachts out in the marina. I could ask them next time I see em hosing down their deck to reset their 20 ft RIB-tender. (can't have a little seaweed on the deck!)

I get all my fenders from the second hand shop. I wonder how hard it is just to deflate and reinflate the fenders. Or maybe put a easy inflate valve on them (like you see on your rubber dingy) and just use the dingy pump to inflate them 5 minutes before port.
I agree though, those fenders use up all the lazeratte space.

Thanks Newt. Good thought about just deflating the standard fenders, but they would still occupy a fair chunk of space. The Easystow look like they'd be particularly flat when deflated. I may purchase one just to try for this season.

Dr Newt and Mike would probably fly, it is < 500 miles for me, so I'm driving down.

Mike, your marina is a bit vacant. Did you forget to use Dial?

Zee, what is your Lat and Long?

Must have been the beans .

You're good Bob, but we actually keep our boat at the local yacht club, just slightly south and up a river. Here's the home dock. Hmmm, must have had beans that day too .

Yup, that's it. Looks like the pic is taken early spring or late fall. Water gets pretty hard up here for 6 months of the year -- otherwise it would be one of the best cruising grounds in the world.

Since we're getting all personal, our land base is located just a little further south of the club in Thunder Bay. We have a small shack on the edge of Lake Superior, at 48 19.23' by 89 12.57.

Re: The Philosophy behind Sailing Simply and cheaply

Ok so when do all you guys get enough time to ponder this philosophy of sailing????

I'm too busy servicing my Genset, cleaning the filters in my Watermaker, and trying to get the new Chartplotter to talk to the fridge and icemaker. I also don't seem to be able to operate the Bow thruster from my iphone 4 since I upgraded the firmware, any suggestions?? I guess I could just use my Ipad instead, but it is only an Ipad 2, and that is sooooooo 2011. Besides how would I be able to update my Facebook Status as I leave the Marina if I use the Ipad? I guess I could do that off of one of the Laptops, but then I wouldn't be able to watch Ellen while on Watch or update my blog. Hey does anyone know what Ebay delivery times are like to Chagos??

Yeah we are really living the Freedom dream

If that is lakefront, you would make a shrewd real estate salesman. Just add a comment like "filtered lake view" and you'll have it pat.

It is lakefront Bob, but sadly there are complications. Suffice it to say, I won't make my first million in real estate . It's a great place to be while preparing for the big sail though.
