In a word, yes.

I live in West Palm Beach, which is about an hour from Miami.

One of the things I enjoy doing is taking pictures of parties at various hip clubs around the city. So I have to leave late and get home exhausted.

This makes me want to have a house in Miami, but nice homes there are prohibitively expensive - $400k plus.

I've wanted to cruise for a long time, but what pushed me over the edge in my boat purchasing decision was to find a Grand Banks 42 in immaculate condition with live aboard dockage transferring with the boat at a killer low rate. So I have my Miami home and my cruising boat as well.

I figure that as a combination of a home and cruising boat I will get my money's worth either way, and can slip into cruising at my own pace.

Should be interesting. We will see in a couple of months how well it works.

I am retaining my terrestrial home, which has a fabulous lake view and is in a very comfortable area. We will see how much time I'll spend there with the new boat and Miami's glittering lights beckoning ...

considering the volume of people and the hugeness of the vessels, remarkably few sink. Like an airliner, when they do, it makes news because of the amount of life on board.

I guess it was more of an aesthetic statement.

Other than "Narrow Boats", you can't take any cruising boat on many of the smaller canals but on the broad canals and thruout the continent, a small catamaran is almost perfect.

We are about 90% that we will just leave the mast behind when we ship our Gemini over to Europe next year, so we don't have to deal with the mast on the canal systems.

You are excluding England by using the term "Europe" right?

No, England is part of the EU and we do plan to go there also, just not the narrow canals.

But you can go up the Thames and from the info I've found you can get all the way to either Birmingham or all the way across to Bristol from London on Broad Canals.

The confusion may have come when I presumed the thread was primarily talking of England (Great Briton) and mentioned going over to the "continent" to differentiate.

Or is this some aversion by the British to being called European?

No. Most people do not include Britain in the description of European waterways.
PLUS..... you will need your mast to get across....unless you want to motor on a bobbing Cat across the busiest shipping lanes in the world....

It's in Europe and it has waterways. Many of the blogs I've found of people running the waterways have done both and don't differentiate unless they are discussing a paticular area.

Why exactly would I "need" a mast to get across a shipping lane. Unlike monohulls, cats don't suffer stability issues when you remove the mast. We've had wave breaking over the bows going down the mississippi and other than worrying about the mast breaking free, I don't see how having the mast up would have made much difference.


We've motored thru NY harbor which is pretty darn busy. The mast was up but I wasn't about to mess around tacking in front of ships and ferries just to say I sailed it.

Am I missing something?
