The Greatest Production Monohull of All Time - By Bob Perry

I'd say congratulations are in order for the inimitable Robert Perry (a former member here). Check out who topped Cruising World's "40 greatest production monohulls of all time" list, as voted by those who know!

40 Best Sailboats for Cruising | Cruising World

He actually had several on the list compiled by Cruising World magazine, with some pretty serious competition - both classic and modern. So what is the greatest cruising boat of all time?

The Valiant 40:

Quote:
Few if any contemporary yacht designers have as broad and varied a body of work as the prolific Bob Perry, but his celebrated Valiant 40 is certainly the most popular of them all. Perry’s double-ender, with its signature canoe stern, has a salty profile, but it’s the split appendage fin-keel and skeg-rudder combination that made it one of the first true “performance cruisers.”
Congrats Bob. You deserve it.

Pretty great boat. Tayana 37 was up there as well; lots of Perry designs.

Do you know if he is a descendant of Admiral Perry? That's a beautiful boat and a beautiful photograph.

I'm kinda surprised that they didn't pick the 42 over the 40. It's pretty clearly the better boat, since it was born out of all the input from 40 owners and Perry's own thoughts about improvements. So makes me wonder if it's about "boats that made a difference", which it has to be as every boat is pretty much a compromise of some sort or other.

My old boat made the list. Never thought it was deemed a cruiser, more a race boat. Cal 40, #14 on the list.

The Admiral was a Peary, not a Perry. . . .

Not a bad selection, its a tough job really and everyone has a personal bias so no matter who drew up a list many would not be happy with it.
