You might be a frugal person if:

You have a soldering iron. Bonus points if you own a de-soldering iron.
You own a Volt-ohm meter (Lots of sailors have that) Yep frugal.
Have three or more kinds of fiberglass cleaner/ polishing compounds aboard.
Know how to make an eyesplice in single and or double braid.
Clean the boats bottom yourself.

Not having the fiberglass cleaners surely doesn't eliminate me from the frugal club ,eh? Got all the other stuff. and built the boat using up cycled lumber Great success with my reverse turkey baster when replacing capacitors in wide screen TV's I find as throw outs. Still refund all my empties and drive a nice Lexus suv somebody paid 150 thou for and I got in auction for 3200. (after 2 yrs had to replace pads and rad) Now I heat with wood and garden a bunch Had a real job once but pickin an grinnin is much more satisfying . Frugal has never been an obstacle

Even more interestingly, I have been using a $10 Casio for navigation for years now and I would be hard pressed to believe the Rolex is more accurate. But I would believe this in the end, given a proof.

Meanwhile, the idea of my cheapo Casio being more accurate than your 10k Rolex gives me a huge ego boost, especially as long as we are chatting on a (marginally) sailing forum. I mean it, it is a wonderfully kick ass idea.

I think a nice Rolex will often give way less joy to its owner than a $10 Casio gives to any African kid. Maybe because people who buy Rolexes will hardly ever have just one. Each next stimulus must be stronger to keep pleasure at the same level. A known fact in behaviorism and a reason of many an addict fail.

I am like you. I love well made, beautiful objects. I do not care how much they cost. I am a perfect lotto winner because I will have zero qualms buying beautiful mainsails, sextants and, who knows maybe even some jewellery. Kim does too!

I think the 10 dollar casio will keep better time till the battery dies. Then the 10,000 rolex will shine. Worth 9,990 dollars? Only you can be the judge of that.
Is there an affordable good quality waterproof timepiece that doesn't need batteries?
We are making the assumption that 10,000 is not affordable of course.

Yes. It is called the Sun. If it is pitch dark, it is past 20:00 but not yet 06:00.

If the Sun is to the East, it is morning. The opposite holds true for the moments when the Sun is to the West.

If everyone is sitting in the shade sipping a drink, it will be about noon or early afternoon.

No batteries required, and as accurate as one needs to make it thru one's life.

Nope, it was more if you have one of the items on the list then your frugal. Buying a 150K lexus for $3200 is frugal. Buying it for $149k, not so much.

I've had my Citizen Skyhawk Eco-Drive for over eight years now. It doesn't need a battery, just sun and it is the most accurate watch I have ever had as it gets updates from national time standards every night.

Retail was ~$600 USD. I got mine from a relative who worked for Citizen for only $200 USD. She has since retired, so I won't be able to get that deal again. However, it has cured my lust for watches, so in that regard it is well worth it.

Well, my slightly more expensive Casio claims 7 year battery life, and that ain't bad. And of course, I seem to remember reading here that the rolex is supposed to be returned to a dealer annually for maintenance. Doubtless that service is far more expensive than a new Casio battery (or several additional Casio watches).

Rolex and other silly expensive watches are not timepieces IMO, they are jewelery... something that this particular sailor does not need or want.
