This is is a good boost to keep walking the docks

I'm ashamed to say that I can't figure out how to filter Sailboatlisting results by date. The year field here refers to the date of the build and a google search didn't shed any light. Mind cluing me in?

Indeed the frugal mind is not bound for the Panama Canal ... ;-)

The American counterpart (a Contessa 26) is way more expensive though. ;-)

Disadvantages of living in the richest country of the world? ;-)

Think globally, buy locally.

I'm hoping that being willing to pay cash up front and motivated to buy in short order if all looks well enough (including a survey) will help me find/negotiate with the right seller . .

True! Although, I was recently surprised to learn that professional land delivery from Texas to California is much less expensive than I thought, which is a possibility for accessing markets in the Gulf and the Caribbean. Focusing on the PNW is still my priority, in terms of frugality and otherwise.

Sorry, it's not really filtering. When you do a search it puts them in chronological order (newest on top). I just paid attention to the dates as very specific searches would only return one or two boats some from years old listings.

re: The Frugal (AKA poor) Sailor

This is a GREAT thread! Still haven't finished reading (saved my place to come back later), but just had to share (Not sure if anyone else posted this so if you did, my apologies.)

One of my most favorite "cruising books":

"The Sensible Cruiser" (The Thoreau Approach): by Don Casey & Lew Hackler

Not sure where it came up in the book but the chapter sounded a lot like many posts here at CF:

"So what kind of boat should I get?"

Answer: The boat you have now!

Lots of quoets by Thoreau that totally fit this thread regarding attitudes, costs, rewards...

While on the subject of "frugal", I recently bought a book through Amazon after finding suggestions for it here...

"Voyaging on a small income"

I am normally a very positive person and would normally have kept it if only a few pages fulfilled what it promised... But it didn't! I was SO, very disappointed! I have cabinets FILLED with sailing/cruising books... This will be the first one I have ever returned...

Wish I had an alternative (positive) book on this subject, but I don't...

LOTS of threads here at CF on cruising on small incomes/kitty... Read just about every post I could find (still searching for more!)...

I'll be coming back to this thread tomorrow morning with my cup of coffee!

Thank you for this!

Best,
Richard

BTW: Frugal? My wife and I plan to spend months on the ICW, The San Juans and the Sea of Cortez on our Chrysler 26 trailerable. (Sleeps 6, 6' standing headroom tons of features that "frugally" bring her up to be experienced as a much larger boat!

Hey JD,
Your boat looks great and you look like you have a fun time with her.
Regarding "Voyaging on a Small Income", I read that book not as a how to manual, but as a syllabus of philosophy geared to getting ones head wrapped around being frugal. Taken from that perspective it's a fine read, if a little out dated. But it looks like you have "frugal" under control. Having fun on less is what "frugal" is all about imo. Cheers!

Sorry for the delay. I will be bringing her near Vancouver BC, so I'm prioritizing the Pacific NW but open to the right boat in most North American locations, as time is on my side once I have her. I'm in Toronto at the moment.

I'm looking for a reliable and affordable monohull that can handle in weather, ideally min 30', and am ready to buy. This will be my first boat, but my parents are handy boaters and have lived aboard cruising on theirs.

You are in Toronto? The Mason 33 I posted earlier is in Kingston, just 3 hours away by car. Correct me if I'm wrong...but it meets all your requirements and comes in way under budget. You could buy it now, start sailing next summer, and get as far west as you can sail on the great lakes, then truck the remainder at a reasonable cost.

I'm just curious why you aren't interested in the Mason33 ?

Thanks for posting this to the under $30k forum. I was interested right away but haven't had luck getting a response from the seller. I'd love to go take a look but figure that since I've messaged the ad twice, I'll wait a few days before trying again.

Cheaper if he hauled it out and leave it on the hard if not there.
Hi, I've only recently started to read through this thread from the beginning, so please excuse the blast from the past, but could you elaborate a bit on the above, with some names of marinas and/or place names?

I will be looking for long-term berthing opportunities either in France (Côte Vermeille, close to the Spanish border) or in Spain from autumn of next year.

Thanks in advance,
