The key is to drill the rivit holding the disk on off, tapping new threads and screwing the disk back down once the new diaphram is in place. I've read up on it before, as the fuel pump on my old 70's goldwing is now made of unattainimum.

The carburetors on my 70's Goldwing were shot and beyond rebuilding. A rebuildable set would run $200+, and then another $500 to have them professionally rebuilt. Add shipping and misc. parts, and I would have been looking at close to $1000.

Instead, I made an intake using a VW Type 4 plenum and some PVC pipe. I bought a new Carter 32/32 carb to put on it, and it runs great!

Total cost: between $150 and $175 for everything, and I'll be able to get many more years from that bike.

I gave my Son a Suzuki Samurai to learn to drive and do some four wheeling in. The 87 Samurai had a very complex electronically controlled carburetor that was impossible to rebuild and get right, usual swap was to a Weber, but the Weber ran rich which washed fuel off the cylinder walls and led to excessive ring wear, but the real killer was that it would flood badly if not level, not the best for a four wheeling vehicle.
I put a Keihin carb off of a Harley on it and it not only ran perfectly once I got it jetted in, but would continue to do so on such a steep slope that oil pressure was the limiting factor, that was my best carb swap.

Best Samurai swap though that I have seen was to put a Hayabusa motor in one, talk about not sounding right, a Busa powered Samurai on a hill climb is insane

I've read about the VW conversion. I decided the rebuild the carb's myself, as I've done that before with SU's (Skinners Union, love that name), strombergs and side draft Delortos before. I put Randall'a full carb rebuild kit in.

Well the thread is definitely drifting a bit..... Better set a sea anchor....

The only thing I have a slight regret about is the title of the thread. Semantics means that the absolute meaning of the word is addressed.

I did however go to the trouble of spelling out the thread intent.

For that reason, I carry on pointing out the necessity for chopped off pockets to go frugal but not skimp on safety. It will involve more work than wanted but....

The side draft carburetor on a Corvair turbocharged 180 hp engine was the absolute WORST ! It would starve on a tight corner and flood on a tight corner going the opposite direction.

I miss my dad's old one. He's the one that taught me about balancing SU's.

Though in a pinch a hose to the ear does well to.

When you get over to Europe, the data plans are much cheaper. Very frugal, less than a dollar per GB.

Well, owning a UniSyn (Carburetor syncing tool where you have multiple side draft carburetors) is one sure sign of a frugal person. So we're mostly on track.

Gee I've been wasting my dataplan on this site for years and years. Some days it's better then dinner and a movie.....
