The Bucket list (no the other one)

Well with all the discussions about essential cruising gear, I'd thought I would start the bucket list. That is a list of ways a bucket can be used on a boat..

Heres My short list as a start:

Haulling water up to wash the deck.
Emergency rudder used with two ropes trailed off the stern aft switching from port to starboard to control direction
Tool holder when up the mast
washing machine with a plunger
seat when upside down
fish holder
emergency head, for some old salts it is the head
Taking trash out
bailing water
Water purifier with hole and a filter in the bottom (think large britta thingy)
I hear you can also use it with a mop to wash the deck though I've not done this ;-)
rat trap sometimes a cat trap but not for Mr. Timmy.
washing up
doing dishes
step stool
potted plants (ok probably not on a boat)

What other ways can a bucket be used on a boat????

That's only applicable for multihulls...

A metal bucket can be used as a hat to keep the government from reading your thoughts.

Re: The Bucket list (no the other one)

That bucket-as-emergency-rudder trick might work with a sailing dinghy, but isn't going to work on a keelboat.

Back when I raced ultra-lights, the bucket served as a head when women were aboard. Unfortunately, most women were smart enough to stay away from ultra-lights back then.

If enough rum has been consumed, a bucket will serve as a decent-enough congo drum to accompany the guitars in the cockpit. Don't try this down below.

I've always kept square buckets aboard; better for bailing.

Re: The Bucket list (no the other one)

First I use it to boil the water in for tea/coffee, then chuck in various food items for soup/stew, then eat from it as a bowl and finally draw up some sea water for the washing it and myself.
Now I have my girlfriend on board, I have had to get a another bucket to use for toilet purposes; she is very particular about keeping the two buckets separate but she is worth it.

Hum... I worked with a guy who put tinfoil around his monitor.

Yes, we girls are high class and many times require three buckets, one for cooking and cleaning, one for the head and one to keep the Champagne chilled.

A bucket can come handy when the dreaded boat flip occurs... it will at least keep your coiffure intact

Ever tried to spot that island on the horizon but the sun was in your eyes making it impossible to see anything?! With a bucket and some creativity you could have made a special sun hood :

The tricky item is the lens as it is the type that blocks direct sunlight but lets indirect light pass. A dark bucket works even better than a white one!

Laundry. You can use a plunger to agitate.

Re: The Bucket list (no the other one)

a 5 gal bucket is great for landing fish in if you have a small cockpit or dont like blood everywere.
trick is to have a loop and slip knot ready for big fish to slip over the tail so as to suspend them in the bucket, and a quick jab with a sharp knife in the back of the head to kill them
