The Barely Known Areas of Cruisers Forum

While reading a recent volatile thread, I found a direct link to areas that I never knew existed on this forum.

I still haven't discovered an easy way to navigate to them from the main board, but wanted to share the direct links so that those that may be interested can find them.

These "uncategorized" groups have some very interesting topics: "Astronomy" "Photography" "Small Boat Cruising" "Surfing & Cruising" "Single Handers" "Gun Owners" and more.

You must join each group (though that seems odd to me). But the advantage is topic specifics, and if you don't want to talk about the subject civilly, don't go there.

Hopefully, the Forum Gods can make a direct link in the main area, and these topics can become viable again and not die a slow unknown death.

Top menu: Community, sub menu: Social Groups.

On the left hand side, click on "View All categories" oe "View All Groups". There are several pages of groups.

Sailing Naked Group?

What do they need a forum for? Exchange pictures of their aging bodies?
Plenty of that during the Colombus Day Regatta, more naked sailing than you can shake a stick at.

I never knew these sub-groups existed, thx I guess..

Why would it not be listed under the MAIN header of "Forums"?

There are 5 areas listed, no link to the social groups. While "sailing naked" may be a social group, guns and specifically having them on board is not. It is a safety issue as important as rules of the road/sea. For those that do not like them, do not go there.

First, and most importantly, thanks for pointing this out.

I was a reader of such a thread that was abruptly cut off and shut down by a "moderator." Reading the moderator's bio, it was apparent that he was not much of a cruiser, but his location also suggested very strong prejudices in connection with the subject he "moderated." A poor combination for someone with the power to halt a conversation. The original poster was seeking facts as well as data based on experience. As frequently occurs when the subject matter is controversial, the information sought was slow in developing and had to be sorted out from the more numerous interjections of opinion and unrelated chaff. Nonetheless, it was developing when the hammer dropped.

The uncategorized items mentioned in the full text version of the quote above includes a category about "gun ownership" or a similar name. This is a direct hint at the subject matter the discussion cut off by the moderator (the one I reference). It is also a label that itself indicates a prejudice against guns. My proposal would be to change the title of that Uncategorized Forum to "WEAPONS ON BOARD." Broader, still inclusive, and in reality more descriptive since flare guns (flare pistols) are also considered as weapons by some and may be taken away as such. Odd though that easily broken glass bottles that can have some gasoline put inside, with a rag (or even paper) used to close are not. Oh well, that is what discussion is about, unless prematurely cut off. Since the category could be almost as controversial as, say anchors and anchoring, why not make it mainstream?

I joined the single handers group a while back, but no one ever seems to post there, or else I'm not notified of them.

gamayun,

If you specifically subscribe to a thread, you can choose to be notified whenever someone posts to it.

Still, some singlehanders are not very outgoing personalities, maybe the lack of thread activity reflects that.

Cheers,

Ann

I did not know they were there. I will give them a try as I fall in a couple of the interest areas. Single Handers and 30' and Under to name a couple.

Because they are closed groups, not open forums.

It's like FB or Yahoo groups. Some are open and anyone can read what has been posted. Others are closed and only those who seek them out and join them can see what is going on in the group.

I must confess to being busted by a Mod this past week, one of my responses was deleted. However, in my case it was justified. I guess I was too emotionally involved and went a little outside the rules when responding.

So in my case, it was good and I support the decision. In the case you mention, where a Mod oversteps the bounds due to personal prejudice, hmmm, not so good.
