Taking a Dog to the Bahamas and Back to the USA

Rules with the Bahamas seem to change a lot. I will be bringing my dog to the Bahamas next February I need to know what docs the government requires and what docs are needed to bring the dog back to the US. Any suggestions will be appreciated

You might have to change the dong for Bahamian currency or US dollars.

Noonsite is where you want to look, more here - http://www.noonsite.com/Countries/Ba...rc=Formalities

For the U.S. and Canada, the following are the main provisions of the import permit as it applies to dogs and cats:

(a) The animal must be 6 months of age or older.
(b) The animal must be accompanied by a valid certificate which substantiates that it has been vaccinated against rabies within not less than one (1) month and not more than ten (10) months prior to importation for the one (1) year vaccine. For the three (3) year vaccine it must be within no less than one (1) month and not more than thirty-four (34) months prior to importation into The Bahamas.
(c) The animal must be accompanied by a Veterinary Health Certificate presented within 48 hours of arrival in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to a licensed veterinarian for an examination.

The Permit Is Valid For One (1) Entry And Must Be Used Within One (1) Year From The Date Of Issue.

When traveling from US to other countries, check the USDA APHIS website for most current known regulations by country. From the USDA:

Bahamas - Summary of Requirements

An import permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, P.O. Box N-3028, Nassau, Bahamas. Apply at least 4 weeks in advance.

The following protocols for exporting animals to the Bahamas are available through the International Regulations Retrieval System (IRRS).

SPECIES - MOST RECENT UPDATE

Cattle - (Under revision)
Sheep - September 2005 (pdf 15kb)
Goats - September 2005 (pdf 14kb)

For species not listed, the requirements are not known. However, exporters wanting to ship livestock or germplasm whose requirements are not listed in the IREGS, should have the interested party (importer/buyer) in the country of destination apply for an Import Permit at the appropriate ministry. This Import Permit will most likely outline the specific requirements.

So.. there you go. Contact the ministry of agriculture in Bahamas and see what they need. Don't take our word for it - these things change all the time.

Also, your local USDA import/export center may have the information you need. USDA APHIS | Animal Health
