Re: Swan 38 (Ship Killer)

I remember that book. I read it in the mid ‘80s while living in the Yukon working as a surveyor for the Yukon Territorial Government and daydreaming about sailing. In the last scene, the tanker captain sees a trimaran crossing his bow, almost wishing he was aboard, not anticipating the shoulder-launched rocket about to slam into his bridge.
A few years later, I moved to the Salish Sea and bought a trimaran. I’m still here, on a larger trimaran..

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

I guess it's not a huge spoiler because you find out pretty fast in the book. After his Swan 38 is sunk by a ship, the survivor decides to try and hunt the ship down and sink it. That's really where it starts to get good.

Actually the tanker sank Dr H's first boat which was a different one than the Swan 38. His wife was killed also.

Dr H found the Swan 38 later to use to try and sink the tanker and found a new lady friend as well.....and it goes from there

Yeah, the only scene I remember that I really didn't like was the one with the sea snakes and the foul-weather gear. It just didn't read in a way that made sense to me then.

Thumbs up Re: Swan 38 (Ship Killer)

I read that book (Ship Killer) and actually used it for research for my novel, World of Mirrors. Tried to get a feel on what it might be like to be run down (of a near miss) by a huge cargo ship. The novel concludes in a cat and mouse game in the shipping lanes of the Baltic. In the fog. Scary.

And for more fun "And The Sea Will Tell" about the pitfalls of making new friends in remote anchorages.
True story written by the prosecutor of the Charles Manson murders: Vincent Bugliosi.
He went on to represent one of the suspects featured in said book.
What a read!

Hi "Judyinboston". When/where published? As a sailor as well as a journalist writing about defence and security issues, I'm seriously interested in adding to my library. Regards.

Re: Swan 38 (Ship Killer)

About 15 years ago, The Open Boat by Webb Chiles got me hooked on reading and following the most accomplished small boat sailor of our generation.

books

Larger than life, the real thing and at 78, still doing his age in push ups. He completed his sixth circumnavigation in April, this one on a Moore 24' which he now often lives aboard in San Diego.

I read that book as a kid, maybe 5-6th grade? I always remember it as a good read. I guess I need to read it again!

Yep, we know.

I posted this as a motivator for wannabe sailors.

I read it in 1979 and it was the final push for me to go from power to sail.

That's impressive he is still going that strong at 78.

Maybe he should write about his workout method and diet etc
