Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

Here's what you want, a Rosborough Privateer. Doesn't get any more piratey-looking than this:

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

Piratey is good, with out the rigging and deck hardware, mine is starting to look like an iron clad civil war era battle ship.

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

ratlines are great but avispas like em too much , and these huge red wasp/hornets make hella damages on human skin.....so i soap and poison mine regularly. soon to be added are more ratlines on mizzen, and pinrails and belaying pins. mebbe some mast pulpits with pinrail and pins also. mebbe even baggywrinkles and i need lazy jax.
and some boom gallows one each boom, so i can add canvas covers and biminis and places to stash solar panels i have on deck int he way....
i already have light boards for my nav lights i have mounted 10-12 ish feet above water and out on the shrouds... much much better visibility. much more piratey in appearance than sleek low sloops..
must have more than one mast for a pirate ship....

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

On the higher quality end consider a Liberty 458. But they are not cheap and not quite as "piraty". (pic one)
Hardin 44/45 possibly. Of course Sea Wolf/Sea Tigers. However.... DO NOT buy an older one with plywood cabins and decks! Trust me... you'll be sorry.
The Wauquiez Amphitrite 43 is a very well built boat. (Pic 2)

Zeehag,
What is your native language?

Vespids (wasps) only make nests in the spring and early summer times. The queen that survived winter makes the first part by herself and she will almost never sting you. If you check your eat lines one
Time a week with a spyglass or binoculars, you can knock down the nest before she grows more wasps. She will get discouraged after 1 or 2 times knocking down and will go somewhere else.

Once summertime comes it is too late for her to build a neat in time to grow a new queen to survive the nest winter and so you never see new nests being started after say late June or July in the north or after late December or January in the south.

Yes I am a beekeeper, so I know about bees (apis) and wasps (vespid).

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

If we're going to get all technical about just what is, and isn't a pirate looking boat, we may as well also use the proper nomenclature regarding armament. On board seagoing vessels, projectile ordnance is referred to as "guns" not cannons. Cannon balls are properly referred to as "shot". I have been schooled on this by my son/crew (now LCpl) many times. It finally sank in. Arghhhhh.

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

Newbie here myself (first post, actually). I've been looking at boat ads, and one "piratey" design that caught my eye (in my price range) was the Mariner 32:

https://www.google.com/search?q=mariner+32&&tbm=isch

It's a ketch with clipper bow and taffrail, often with chainplates and ratlines--all features of the pirate look. To me, the wineglass stern has that "old ship" look, especially on bigger boats with an aft cabin and portlights, much more than a canoe stern.

Not sure it's a good boat for a beginner, but I'd be interested if anyone has any experience with it.

Re: Suggestions For Pirate Ship Looking Boats

scott macpherson, please do not make me regret allowing you to keep our clan name. we are of cluny, 9000 yr old genes, celt.

i am in mexico.
avispas are huge horse sized red wasps that cause hospitalization of victim. they are not nice .
i do not know the latin name , merely the latino name, as i am in barra de navidad, jalisco, mexico, where these nasty monsters reside.
they also live in mazatlan.
and la cruz de huanacaxtle.
and zihuatenejo.
i do not likee them.
no. .
my native language is upper crust new england english with a heavy mayflower twang, thankyou, some lord stirling mixed.
i pick up languages very easily.
why do you ask?
i typo disability of hands, so, there are reasons for my typos. yes i do edit. and, NO voice activated and voice stufff does not work with my voice.
now, back to the topic at hand.
i have beeen seeking the best sized bow cannon and storm chasers for my lil shiplet.... have just the places to install 'em....

cheechako--some of these "loser" boats arent badly put together, even wth ply wood stuff. isnt that much to replacing mine, so far-- no big deal. i found my deck only 1/4 ply with mucho mucho (~1/4 in) each side sandwiching that ply to one inch thick decks. they did good.
it all depends on the po and history of boat. this one was laid over on santa barbara breakwall for a week by a former owner, i believe it was 2000-2001, in that time frame she was there, and is ok. no problem.
do not omit the formosa and ct yankee clipper models, which is what mine is.

RE the cannon, google "golf ball cannon"
A friend many years ago had an antique line throwing cannon, bore the size of a coke can and held I think a whole lb of black powder. I'd love to find one like that, but the golf ball cannons can be had inexpensively

Boatie, I think I need my reading glasses. When I read the transom the first time I read 'lady of spam'. I spent a minute trying to reconcile euro millions and spam. Or maybe I need another drink! ;-)

Ahahahaaaa.. no she's a real boat and when I knew her she was owned by a beautiful Dutch couple called Tom & Teya... we wintered in Andratx, Mallorca together.
But... Euromillions would be needed by me to buy her or similar.. then gut and rebuild to my spec...
