Re: Storm off of Nova Scotia

Talked to my sis in Gander yesterday. She commented about the winds in the past two weeks. 117kph at Gander, 150 at Wreckhouse. Reck house is known for high winds and got its name because they had locomotives blow over there.

Recently when looking at NL wx charts ALL regions around NL were at Gale force or higher. That was on a couple of occasions. What is troubling is, I find them to be optimistic.

That's really rough to hear, but not at all unexpected. I imagine they were unable to take PLBs or an EPIRB into the liferaft, assuming they even got that far.

Re: Storm off of Nova Scotia

From the Canadian Press newswire ( http://www.thecanadianpress.com/ ):

Woods Harbour, N.S. A massive search for five young fishermen whose boat
capsized off southwestern Nova Scotia was reduced to a missing persons
case late Tuesday as the military concluded there was little hope for
their survival. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said
the search would be handed over to the RCMP because of "frigid water and
poor weather conditions." The search covered more than 18,000 square
kilometres of open ocean since it started late Sunday.

Re: Storm off of Nova Scotia

I wouldn't want to ride that storm in summer. I have no desire to try it in winter.

I found their information and training useful and accessible to non-academic learner.

Back then there was plenty of freebies. Check now to see if it is still the same good source. Sometimes good things get commercialized but I hope this one has not.

Thanks for the link. It looks useful and may still be free. I didn't dig deep.
